Bariatric surgeon shares a step-by-step guide on how to start your weight-loss plan in 2026: Chew food well, stay active

It’s that time of year when we rethink our lives, our choices, and for many of us, our weight. Losing those extra kilos is often on our minds, but how many of us find it hard to lose those pounds year after year? As we move into 2026, let’s take a new approach to our weight-loss journey. This year, instead of focusing solely on numerical targets, let’s set real, sustainable goals. Sometimes we need a little help to stay on track. Setting weight-loss goals is key to staying fit. Here’s the right way to do it(Shutterstock) “The first step to losing weight successfully is to set clear goals. We need to be specific and realistic about our health, not just have vague hopes. It’s important to be mindful in this process,” Dr Ankit Potdar, a Consultant Laparoscopy, Bariatric, and Robotic Surgeon at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, tells Health Shots. More than you can chew: Swetha Sivakumar explores extreme food records

There was a time when I would hear about the world’s largest pumpkin or watch a hot-dog-eating contest, and wonder what motivated people to pursue such extreme feats. Where do you draw the line?: Shaggy and Scooby-Doo. I guess it takes all sorts, I would think to myself. With a little digging, though, I have discovered that there is reason, of a kind, behind many such endeavours: a search for recognition, a sense of pride in one’s work, a wish to reach out to the community (and what better way to do that than giant foods). So, this week, I’m looking at my favourite food records that tell an intriguing story. The world’s heaviest pumpkin: Travis Gienger, current Guinness World Record holder in this category, has been growing pumpkins since he was 14. In April 2023, aged 43, he decided to step up his game. He bought two specially crossbred seeds, at a whopping $600 each, and began to germinate them indoors. Once germinated, the seedlings were transferred to a hoop house in his garden, …

Oscars special: How football goalkeepers with glorious time-wasting theatrics chew the clock, featuring Jordan Pickford and Emi Martinez | Football News

The only earthly abode where time wasting does not denote inaction is perhaps a football field. To run the clock down, footballers feign injuries, clutch their limbs in pain, roll on the grass, pose as though the roof has crumbled on them, so much so that it is theatre unto itself. It’s the opposite of the phrase in the lexicon—spending time doing nothing. But footballers have transformed it into a specialised (dark) art, and 140-odd years later, the lawmakers have emerged none the wiser in eliminating the malaise (or genius) that has plagued the sport, continuing to devise clampdown measures. So to bell the old but pesky cat, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) has reached a consensus that football’s worst time-keepers are the goalkeepers, and so referees will award corners and indirect free-kicks if they hold onto the ball for more that eight seconds from next season. The prevailing law affords only six seconds, but has been leniently implemented. Even the most hard-fisted referee refrains from awarding indirect free kicks, unless in extreme cases. …

Sharing how he pitched the character, Avinash said, “This is a man who has lived in the interiors of Bihar. He doesn’t have access to gyms. He couldn’t have looked the classic beefed up anti-hero we are used to seeing. I kept him real. There was no workout. I was eating like truck drivers of the region because Chandan is a guy who is always on the move. He is rugged. I was living a life like them, with them. I spent about 10 days eating at …
