A water rejuvenation lesson from the Maha Kumbh

A water rejuvenation lesson from the Maha Kumbh

Apr 16, 2025 06:51 IST First published on: Apr 16, 2025 at 06:51 IST Share Prayagraj hosted more than 60 crore pilgrims and visitors over a span of 45 days during the Maha Kumbh, according to the estimates of the Uttar Pradesh government. The world has witnessed the religious and spiritual fervour that moved the entire nation while it celebrated its reverence for the river goddess Ganga. Yet, the event is fundamentally a manifestation of a profound and deep-seated river-society relationship. Cultural gatherings such as the Maha Kumbh are known to happen along rivers and water bodies. Can we leverage this relationship for the enduring rejuvenation of rivers and water bodies? The Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj takes place along a stretch of about 20 km and in an area of 40 square km around the sangam of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. Last straw: When flow becomes froth in the Yamuna in Delhi | Latest News India

Every day at the crack of dawn, 66-year-old Asresar Saini walks along the length of Kalindi Kunj ghat till he reaches the Yamuna. The river, which is fairly clean and devoid of any odour when it enters the Capital at Palla, deteriorates drastically by the time it touches Kalindi Kunj-Okhla stretch, before exiting Delhi. Toxic foam floats over the Yamuna near Kalindi Kunj on March 5. Till now the river has travelled around 50km through Delhi, and effluents from 20 out of 22 major drains have been injected in its channel. Saini fills a bucket of this toxic water and bathes in it — just like he has for the last 30 years while living along the Yamuna’s banks. There was a time, he remembers, when the river’s water would not make his skin itch. “We would drink this water and bathe …

The Congress announced on Friday that it will build a dedicated Chhath ghat at the Yamuna riverbanks, which will be named the “Sharada Sinha Ghat”, similar to those at the Maha Kumbh. Bihar Congress president Akhilesh Prasad Singh, during a press conference, highlighted the contribution of the people from Poorvanchal in Delhi’s development, particularly during the Congress-led government when the “city was transformed into one of the best in the world”. However, Singh criticised the BJP and AAP for allegedly exploiting the Poorvanchali community as mere vote banks, rather than addressing their concerns. Singh alleged that both the BJP and AAP caused deep hurt to the sentiments of Poorvanchalis by preventing them from celebrating their most important religious festival, Chhath Puja, at the banks of the Yamuna river. He stated that while the river was highly polluted and the Delhi High Court had banned the festival due to the contamination, the AAP government did nothing to …
