Four persons were arrested in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on Monday for allegedly arranging the ‘marriage’ of a 15-year-old girl for Rs 3 lakh, a police official said. The investigation began after the girl was reported missing from the Banganga Police station limits, the official said. The alleged human trafficking racket was exposed based on the victim’s statement and other evidence, he added. “A probe revealed that the girl’s actual age was 15, but her Aadhaar card had been tampered with to show her as a 21-year-old. Two men from Indore took advantage of the girl’s family’s poor financial condition and lured her with the promise of earning money and buying a house,” Banganga police station in-charge Siyaram Gurjar said. According to Gurjar, the accused posed as the girl’s relatives, completed the marriage formalities and accepted Rs 3 lakh from the groom’s family in exchange. “The groom, his father and two others have been arrested. New Delhi: Issuing a slew of directions for the effective implementation of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, the Supreme Court on Friday said that child marriage deprives children of their agency, autonomy, and right to fully develop and enjoy their childhood. A bench, headed by CJI DY Chandrachud, ordered state and Union Territory governments to appoint officers solely responsible for discharging the functions of Child Marriage Prohibition Officers (CMPOs) at the district level. “These officers should not be burdened with additional duties that could impede their focus on preventing child marriage,” the bench said. The bench, also comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, was dealing with a public interest litigation (PIL) raising the grievance that the rate of child marriages in India is alarming despite the enactment of the 2006 Act. “Government had launched a crackdown against child marriage in two phases last year and it was found that many elderly men married multiple times and their wives were mostly young girls, belonging to the poor section of the society,” Assam CM said. The Assam Cabinet has given the nod to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935 in a bid to end child marriage, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. “This Act contained provisions allowing marriage registration even if the bride and groom had not reached the legal ages of 18 and 21 respectively, as required by law. This move marks another significant step towards prohibiting child marriages in Assam,” the Chief Minister posted on X.
