Fatty liver, post-menopausal women’s health and childhood obesity have emerged as the three most potent concerns for heart disease and diabetes, according to a survey conducted by Apollo Hospitals. It also turns out Indians are low on vitamins, with about 77% of women and 82% of men being deficient in Vitamin D and 49% of men and 35% of women under 40 being vitamin B12-deficient. The report, Health of the Nation, says that of the over 2.5 million individuals studied, 26% were found to be hypertensive while 23% were diabetic despite being asymptomatic, underlining that a symptom-led healthcare model is no longer viable. It also showed that people were becoming more aware about preventive health checks as they grew exponentially from one million in 2019 to over 2.5 million in 2024 — a 150% increase in just five years. Childhood obesity is a growing concern worldwide. But in New Zealand it’s a particularly pressing issue. With one of the highest rates in the OECD, about one in three New Zealand children are overweight or obese. Obesity in children can lead to severe health issues that persist into adulthood. While many factors contribute to childhood obesity – such as diet, physical activity and genetics – one often-overlooked factor is screen time. Children are constantly surrounded by devices such as TVs, tablets and smartphones, and screen time has become a normal part of daily life. The World Health Organization and the American Academy of Paediatrics both suggest preschool-aged children should have no more than one hour of screen time daily. But many young children in New Zealand and overseas are spending significantly more time on screens, with many regularly surpassing these guidelines. Nowadays, there is a lot of high-calorie, high-fat, high-density food consumed, such as fast food and empty calories found in many soft drinks. These are just calories with no nutrition. On top of this, the consumption of calories is high, and exercise is low, meaning that children are spending more time on mobile screens, TVs, and YouTube, rather than engaging in physical exercise on the ground.
