Why US has listed Alibaba, BYD and Baidu as Chinese military companies

Why US has listed Alibaba, BYD and Baidu as Chinese military companies

Earlier this week, the US Department of War added major Chinese companies — including e-commerce giant Alibaba, internet search engine Baidu and EV company BYD — to an official list of “Chinese military companies” operating directly or indirectly in the US. China’s foreign ministry said the list “unreasonably suppressed” Chinese companies and urged the US to “correct its mistaken practices.” Chinese companies, too, criticised the move. BYD told Reuters that the decision harmed “its development achievements in the United States”. Similarly, Alibaba said it was not a Chinese military company “nor part of any military-civil fusion strategy”, and that it would consider appropriate legal action. What is the basis of such inclusions, how does it affect their operations, and what does it say about the state of the larger US-China geopolitical competition? Basis of links to Chinese military The list is in accordance with Section 1260H of the William M. (Mac) Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021. The Act authorises appropriations for military activities of the US Department of Defense. Here, Section …

Mark Zuckerberg Fooling Americans, Is “Hand In Glove” With China: Meta Whistleblower

A former Meta executive, Sarah Wynn-Williams, has come forward as a whistleblower, accusing the company of compromising US national security to establish a substantial business presence in China. According to Wynn-Williams, Meta executives made decisions that allowed the Chinese Communist Party to access user data, including that of Americans. This testimony was given during a congressional hearing led by Senator Josh Hawley, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism. “I saw Meta executives repeatedly undermine U.S. national security and betray American values,” Wynn-Williams said in her opening remarks per CBS News. Wynn-Williams alleges that Meta built custom censorship tools for the Chinese government, enabling extensive control over content moderation. Sen Hawley opened the hearing by saying that Meta had “stopped at absolutely nothing to prevent” Wednesday’s testimony by Ms Wynn-Williams. He also said, “Why is it that Facebook is so desperate to prevent this witness from telling what she knows?” “The greatest trick Mark Zuckerberg ever pulled was wrapping the American flag around himself and calling himself a patriot and saying he …

Foreign Secretary arrives in Beijing as India, China attempt to repair ties | India News

Moving to resume bilateral engagements after the border disengagement, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Sunday landed in Beijing and met a top Chinese Communist Party (CPC) leader. Misri will meet his Chinese counterpart, Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, on Monday for bilateral talks. In Misri’s meeting with Liu Jianchao, head of the International Department of the CPC’s central committee, “the two sides exchanged views on jointly implementing the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, strengthening exchanges and dialogues, and promoting the improvement and healthy and stable development of China-India relations, as well as international and regional issues of common concern”, Chinese state-backed outlet Global Times reported. The Foreign Secretary’s visit is a move to repair damaged bilateral ties after Chinese incursions in 2020 triggered a military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. Earlier, Chinese officials had said the two sides were discussing ways to bring ties back to “normal” — as it was before the face-off began in April-May 2020. Beijing has outlined its “wishlist”: Resumption …

Xi’s skipping of G20 Summit may have more to do with China than with India

Chinese President Xi Jinping was born in the lap of luxury but, as his father was purged during China’s Cultural Revolution, a young Xi had to toil in the farms as a manual labourer in the countryside for 6 years. Those struggles would be nothing compared to the task the all-supreme leader now faces. Xi is skipping the G20 Summit in New Delhi and experts have failed to pin-point the one big reason why China is sending Premier Li Qiang instead. It is true that China’s relationship with India has been mostly frosty since the border clashes in May 2020. And it is also possible that the Chinese government decided to send Premier Li Qiang instead of President Xi to send out a signal. But the Chinese government has maintained that it was ready to work with all the parties for the global event’s success in New Delhi this week. Also, Xi might not want to share the stage with the “tough crowd” at the G20. Many G20 member countries have “hardened their positions on …
