Chinna Chinna Aasai review: Indrans, Madhoo lead an underwhelming tale of self-discovery | Movie-review News

Chinna Chinna Aasai Movie Review: There’s something oddly fascinating about sitting down to watch a two-hander, particularly since it pretty much has to defy the “show, don’t tell” commandment of visual storytelling while also avoiding boring the audience with the abundance of dialogues. While it’s easy for creators to make a film featuring nonstop back-and-forth exchanges between the central characters, the real challenge in crafting a two-hander lies in sidestepping that pitfall and making an artistically impressive work instead. Debutant director Varsha Vasudev’s Chinna Chinna Aasai revolves around two middle-aged people, Madhavan (Indrans) and Leela (Madhoo Shah), whose lives take a turn when fate brings them together in Varanasi (Kashi), Uttar Pradesh. While on one of his regular visits to Varanasi, Madhavan, a Malayali, meets Leela, who hails from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. After getting separated from her tour group and having her belongings stolen, Leela is petrified and unsure of what to do next. When Madhavan offers to help, she is initially suspicious and hesitant. But with no other option, she goes along with …

Governor and Chinna Chinna Aasai actor Madhoo: For someone who took a long break, acting is completely different now

She was a star in the ’90s with hits like Phool Aur Kaante (1991), Roja (1992), and Diljale (1996), before quitting the industry over the lack of fulfilling roles. Now, Madhoo is back with political thriller Governor and Tamil-Malayalam drama Chinna Chinna Aasai, the latter of which is incidentally inspired by the Roja track. Madhoo played Manoj Bajpayee’s wife in Governor and played title role in amil-Malayalam drama Chinna Chinna Aasai “It’s 34 years since Roja that I am playing the title role again. For someone who has taken a long break, it’s a completely different world now. The acting scenario has changed drastically,” she tells us. Pointing to the evolution in acting styles over the decades, the 57-year-old explains, “The way we used to act and what was a norm back then makes my kids laugh today. So, I had to unlearn and learn from the current scenario where acting means being subtle and simple. Now, if you put in the extra effort, it’s overacting! I had a great time in the ’90s, but …

4 min readKochiJun 16, 2026 02:07 PM IST While Indrans is currently hailed as one of the finest character actors in contemporary Malayalam cinema, his ascent to fame and glory wasn’t a cakewalk. Despite being in show business since the early 1980s, it has only been about a decade since the industry began recognising his talent and offering him roles commensurate with his immense potential. As he gears up for the release of his upcoming movie, Chinna Chinna Aasai, where he shares the screen with yesteryear national crush Madhoo Shah, Indrans recalled that in the past, female actors were often hesitant to act in movies where he served as the male lead. What’s in the trailer? The trailer starts with Madhoo, introduced here as Madhubala, as a lost woman in Varanasi. She bumps into Indrans’ character on the street, who asks her if she’s a Tamilian. Later, another character asks her if she’s a Malayali. But Khushboo keeps that identity to herself, as she asks Indrans of the whereabouts of a temple she remembers visiting. Clearly, this isn’t her first visit to the holy city. We learn through a phone call by Indrans that Madhoo’s character visited Varanasi with a travel group, only to lose her way. But she’s not sure if her fellow travel companions would come looking for her. So, she spends her time in the city, dipping her toe in the Ganges, sharing boat rides with Indrans, riding the ferris wheel, and getting back …
