Aravindh Chitambaram finishes third; Gukesh ninth

The reigning champion Aravindh Chitambaram finished third in the 2025 Prague Chess Masters on Friday, scoring five points in nine rounds. Aravindh ended the tournament with two consecutive victories, beating Jorden van Foreest and David Navara in the eighth and ninth round respectively. Earlier, he had a disappointing start to the tournament, losing his first round match against Nodirbek Abusttarov. He, however, bounced back with a win over Hans Niemann in the second round and playing out a draw against Parham Maghsoodloo in the third round. Aravindh, however, lost the way soon after with two losses in the next two rounds before a win against the reigning world champion and fellow Indian Gukesh Dommaraju put him back on track for a good finish. Aravindh finished level on points with Maghsoodloo after nine rounds, but took the third spot on inferior tiebreak score. Pragg lost to German grandmaster Vincent Keymer while Arjun was beaten by World Cup winner Javokhir Sindarov. Friday’s results meant that between the three of them, Praggnanandhaa, Arjun and Aravindh have had three wins in 33 classical games at Wijk aan Zee, with two of those wins coming over Indian players itself. Meanwhile, despite all the scrutiny of his results as the world champion, Gukesh has racked up three wins in his 11 rounds. Indian chess Grandmasters Nihal Sarin and Aravindh Chitambaram have signed a deal with S8UL for the 2025 Esports World Cup. The two rising stars of Indian chess will represent the organisation as chess makes its debut at the Esports World Cup, scheduled to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia later this year. “We’re proud to unveil the next chapter in S8UL’s journey – welcoming NIHAL SARIN & ARAVINDH CHITHAMBARAM , the tactical mastermind behind the board, to represent us at the Esports World Cup 2025,” S8UL posted on social media. This development comes two months after Arjun Erigaisi, the second Indian to break the 2800 rating barrier, signed with American team Gen.G Esports. A host of top international grandmasters including the likes of Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Maxime Vachier Lagrave, Alireza Firouzja, Fabiano Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Ding Liren, Nodirbek Abdusattorov and others have signed with various different teams for the competition.
