HAL Airport, Bengaluru, has become the country’s first airport to operationalise a satellite-guided precision navigation system designed exclusively for helicopters, the state-run aircraft maker said on Friday. With nearly 50 helicopter movements daily at the airport, HAL has closed a long-standing gap in India’s aviation infrastructure. (iStock representative image) Called the Required Navigation Performance – Category H (RNP CAT H) helicopter approach procedure, it has been developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), validated through flight trials by HAL test pilots and approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). “The operationalisation of India’s first RNP CAT H helicopter approach is a significant milestone for the country’s aviation ecosystem. This capability enhances the safety, efficiency and accessibility of helicopter operations and establishes a benchmark for similar procedures to be implemented at airports across the country,” said HAL chief Ravi K. It allows helicopters to fly highly accurate optimised paths, enabling all-weather access while safely navigating terrain and urban obstacles. Army looks to hire civil choppers for logistics on northern borders | India News

The Indian Army is looking to hire helicopters from civil agencies to carry out a range of jobs along the country’s northern borders such as logistics supplies, carrying troops to forward locations and casualty evacuation when needed, The Indian Express has learnt. It plans to deploy these single-engine helicopters in specific sectors in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, such as Drass, Kargil, Batalik, Doda, Kishtwar and Gurez. Barring the specific sectors, the helicopters will be mostly deployed during the winters — from November to April — for stocking of ration, fuel, other stores and operational purposes. Bids have been invited from potential service providers for details of helicopters available for the purpose, including their rate per flying hour and additional flying hours. According to officials, this is a rare instance when the Army will hire helicopters for winter stocking, carrying out logistics work and supplies and other operational purposes. Suspected Kuki insurgents attacked Nungchappi village in the district 229 km from the state capital Imphal, killing a 63-year-old man identified as Yurembam Kulendra Singha.
