Cisco Warns Agentic AI Will Put New Pressure on Enterprise Networks

AI’s infrastructure problem keeps moving. First, companies needed faster chips. Then they needed more GPUs, bigger data centers, and enough electricity to keep those AI factories running. At Cisco Live in Las Vegas, Cisco Chair and CEO Chuck Robbins argued that the next major constraint is the network itself. Robbins said AI traffic could triple over the next three years as enterprises move from chatbots to agentic systems that act, communicate, and make decisions at machine speed. For IT leaders, the message was clear: AI ambitions may soon depend less on access to models and more on whether the network can carry the load. “Every technical innovation over the past 40 years and all the current buzz about GPUs, inferencing, agentic AI, and the latest models — it is all dependent on the network,” Robbins explained. “We expect at least a tripling of networking traffic over the next three years due to the evolving capabilities and consumption demands of AI.” Starbucks and networking Robbins concluded his keynote by introducing Brian Niccol, chairman and CEO of …

China-Linked Cyber Threat Group Hacks US Treasury Department

China-Linked Cyber Threat Group Hacks US Treasury Department

A Chinese-state-sponsored cyberattack compromised the U.S. Treasury, gaining access to classified documents through a vulnerability through third-party cybersecurity provider BeyondTrust. The breach, revealed on Dec. 31, underscores the growing sophistication of state-backed cyber espionage efforts. “Treasury takes very seriously all threats against our systems, and the data it holds,” a department spokesperson said in a statement. “Over the last four years, Treasury has significantly bolstered its cyber defense, and we will continue to work with both private and public sector partners to protect our financial system from threat actors.” Threat actors stole a key to BeyondTrust BeyondTrust reported the breach to the Treasury Department on Dec. 8. The Treasury, in turn, reported the attack to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency and the FBI. Representatives of the Chinese government told reporters the nation was not responsible for the breach. A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington told Reuters attributions of nation-state-sponsored threat actors to China were “smear attacks against China without any factual basis.” The breach occurred after “a threat actor had gained access to …

CISA, FBI Release Guidance for Improving Cybersecurity

CISA, FBI Release Guidance for Improving Cybersecurity

On Dec. 3, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and international partners issued guidance on strengthening systems against intrusions by threat actors targeting telecommunications. The guidance was notably informed by recent breaches affiliated with the Chinese government. The recommendations come weeks after the FBI and CISA identified that China-affiliated threat actors had “compromised networks at multiple telecommunications companies.” Initially, the breaches were believed to target specific individuals in government or political roles. However, on Dec. 3, the FBI clarified that these individuals may not have been the intended targets but were instead “swept up” in the operation. T-Mobile was allegedly one of the affected companies. “Threat actors affiliated with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) are targeting commercial telecommunications providers to compromise sensitive data and engage in cyber espionage,” Assistant Director Bryan Vorndran of the FBI’s Cyber Division, said in a press release. “Together with our interagency partners, the FBI issued guidance to enhance the visibility of network defenders and to harden devices against PRC exploitation.” SEE: Live: AWS re:Invent …
