Air India Phuket-Delhi turbulence: Pilot's dope test positive, say sources

The pilot-in-command of Air India’s Phuket-Delhi flight that faced mid-air turbulence last week has tested positive for a psychoactive substance in the confirmatory screening test, sources said on Tuesday. The sources said the pilot has tested positive for marijuana, a psychoactive drug. On August 4, the Phuket-Delhi flight AI2379, operated with an Airbus A320 aircraft, suddenly lost 300 feet in altitude amid mid-air turbulence, leaving at least 17 people injured. The plane had 145 people onboard, including 137 passengers and 8 crew members. Both pilots of the flight underwent the prescribed psychoactive substance screening test. “The screening test in respect of the Pilot-in-Command (PIC) indicated a result requiring confirmatory testing. Samples have accordingly been sent to the designated laboratory for confirmatory analysis, and the final report is awaited,” the Civil Aviation Ministry said in a statement on August 9. Pilots’ union writes to PM Narendra Modi, urges to replace DGCA with autonomous Civil Aviation Authority

The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to replace the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) with an autonomous statutory body to oversee India’s rapidly expanding aviation sector. In a detailed proposal submitted to the Prime Minister, FIP president Captain C.S. Randhawa called for the creation of a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), arguing that India’s aviation safety regulator needs greater administrative and financial independence. No abnormality was found in the fuel control switch locking mechanism of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner after a pilot flagged a possible defect on an Air India London-Bengaluru flight earlier this year, the Civil Aviation Ministry has said. The DGCA also sent a team to Boeing’s facility in Seattle to test the FCS panel. (PTI Photo) The issue was highlighted by the pilot in command (PIC) in the aircraft’s logbook as soon as the plane returned to Bengaluru on February 2. The plane was subsequently grounded by the airline. In a written reply in Rajya Sabha on Monday, Minister of State in the Civil Aviation Ministry Murlidhar Mohol said the fuel control switch (FCS) locking mechanism was examined at the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) level in Seattle on the directions of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). “Detailed examination of Fuel Control Switch including structural integrity of Fuel Control Switch detents was carried out and no abnormality was observed. However, further inspection of complete ‘Thrust Control Module’ at OEM facility is underway,” Mohol said. …

Centre may push airlines to reduce passenger charges amid lower fuel prices

The government may soon ask airlines to review and reduce surge pricing and additional passenger charges if the recent decline in crude oil and aviation fuel prices proves to be sustainable, Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu said on Thursday. The Centre is closely monitoring trends in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices and has initiated discussions with airlines to assess whether the current easing in fuel costs is likely to continue over the long term. “At present, we are seeing prices coming down, but we need to assess whether this is a long-term reduction or a temporary fall. Discussions with airlines are underway,” Naidu said. Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here. All rights belong to their respective owners.
