Monsoon tracker LIVE: Cloudburst floods hotels, houses in Pahalgam; heavy to very heavy rain lash parts of India

Heavy to very heavy rain lashed parts of India on Saturday, with Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh among the worst-hit as landslides blocked roads and disrupted public life. According to the India Meteorological Department, very heavy rainfall was recorded over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya, while heavy rainfall was recorded over West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In Uttarakhand, heavy rainfall triggered landslides, blocking 120 roads, including three national highways, while around 100 pilgrims were escorted to safety across a washed-out stretch of the Yamunotri National Highway after the route remained cut off for two days. According to the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), a massive accumulation of debris completely blocked the highway at Syanachatti in Uttarkashi district on Thursday after incessant rain triggered a landslide that washed away nearly 100 metres of the road. Rescue personnel secured a rope along an alternative path and carefully guided the stranded travellers across one by one. -PTI Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, …

2025 Uttarkashi Flash Flood Triggered By Ice Patch Collapse, Not Cloudburst: ISRO Study | India News

2025 Uttarkashi Flash Flood Triggered By Ice Patch Collapse, Not Cloudburst: ISRO Study | India News

Last Updated:March 07, 2026, 11:11 IST ISRO study revealed the flood was triggered by the sudden collapse of an exposed ice patch within the nivation zone of the Srikanta Glacier. Flash floods were triggered in the high altitude villages of Dharali in August 2025. (File) In a recent study, scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have pinpointed an overlooked hazard in snow-covered areas as the cause of the flash flood that ravaged parts of Uttarkashi in August last year. The devastating flash flood in Dharali, located in the Uttarkashi region of the Central Himalayas, led to significant damage and loss of life. According to the study, the flood was triggered by the sudden collapse of an exposed ice patch within the nivation zone of the Srikanta Glacier. Nivation zones are areas in high mountains where glaciers undergo seasonal freezing, thawing, and melt-water movement. These processes break down rocks and transport debris, often resulting in the formation of steep-walled, bowl-like basins due to erosion. First Published: March 07, 2026, 11:11 IST News india 2025 …

Collapse of giant mass of glacial debris triggered 2023 Sikkim flood, no evidence of cloudburst: Study | India News

The collapse of a 14.7-million cubic metre mass of rock, ice and sediment into the South Lhonak glacial lake was the trigger behind the devastating 2023 Sikkim flood that destroyed a hydropower dam on the Teesta, reveal the findings of a year-long study published in the prestigious Science journal on Friday. Crucially, the study found no evidence of a “triggering cloudburst event” in the vicinity of the lake. The Sikkim government had told the National Green Tribunal last year that a cloudburst had possibly preceded the glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). The flood had killed 55 people and destroyed the 1200-MW Teesta III hydel project, besides damaging the Teesta IV and V projects and Teesta Low Dams III and IV, as well as farms and buildings in Bangladesh. Story continues below this ad The study says the South Lhonak lake remains “highly susceptible” to future GLOFs — a warning that comes just weeks after an Environment Ministry panel cleared a proposal to build a new 118.64-metre high concrete gravity dam in the place of the …
