Carlos Alcaraz’s incredible self belief helps him isolate clutch moments and raise his game | Tennis News

4 min readUpdated: Jan 31, 2026 11:29 AM IST There is a reason why Carlos Alcaraz has taken his place in sports lovers’ imagination as rapidly as he has racked up an impressive CV by the age of 22, one that even some tennis greats would be envious of. His flashy groundstrokes, easy-going charisma and entertaining style may play a role. But it probably has a lot more to do with the single word he wrote on the cameras after escaping into the Australian Open final with yet another sensational comeback victory: “Believe.” A neatly packaged highlight reel will not do justice to the five-and-a-half-hour-long compelling piece of theatre that took place across a searingly hot Melbourne afternoon on the Rod Laver Arena on Friday. Alcaraz defeated the German third seed Alexander Zverev 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-7 (4), 7-5 in the semifinals. That sheer number-scramble of a scoreline may itself elicit all sorts of conclusions, but Alcaraz willed this against-all-odds victory — facing a surging, peaking opponent and a badly cramping body — …

South Africa must improve ‘clutch temperament’ as ODI rebuild continues: Ashwell Prince | Cricket News

South Africa batting coach Ashwell Prince on Saturday said the Proteas’ ODI side still needs to sharpen its temperament in “clutch moments” as they continue testing combinations ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Prince admitted the team’s immediate focus over the past year has been on Test cricket and the upcoming T20 World Cup, leaving the 50-over format in an experimental phase. “We’ve been able to try different combinations in the 50-over space and we still have time before getting close to a final squad,” Prince said on the eve of the first ODI against India here. Despite being satisfied with both batting and bowling depth, Prince highlighted one area where South Africa must improve. “If there’s one area, it’s the bigger moments — tighter, clutch moments. White-ball cricket is about high-pressure environments and that’s where we want to get better,” he said. With heavy dew predicted for the series opener here Sunday, Prince said the toss could play a decisive role. “Our homework says a lot of dew is expected, so teams usually prefer …

D Gukesh’s silver lining after ending last at Clutch Chess: ‘These guys won’t be there at FIDE World Cup’ | Chess News

Gukesh Dommaraju ended last in the Clutch Chess: Champions Showdown exhibition event after topping the standings on day 1. While Magnus Carlsen won the four-player event, Fabiano Caruana ended second and Hikaru Nakamura was third. D Gukesh lost five out of six games to Carlsen over the three-day tournament with the remaining clash ending in a draw. Asked about his performance at the Clutch Chess event, Gukesh said: “Obviously not great. The first day was quite promising. I started off quite well, but the second and third days were just completely off. At some point, it was very tough to start getting wins, and when it’s like that against this opposition, it usually goes downhill quite fast. But overall, great experience, especially before the FIDE World Cup. I mean, there are no better training partners than these three (Carlsen, Nakamura and Caruana). So the good thing is these three won’t be there in the World Cup. So, I had a better training than what I’ll be facing. So, I hope it helps.” World champion Gukesh …

World no 1 Magnus Carlsen defeated world champion Gukesh Dommaraju in both their games on day 2 of the Clutch Chess: Champions Showdown exhibition event before defeating Hikaru Nakamura twice and losing his games to Fabiano Caruana to surge into top spot in the four-player event. Gukesh, who was on top of the standings after day 1, slumped to last spot after winning no games on day 2. The format of the three-day tournament means that players earned one point for a win on day 1, two points for wins on day 2 and will earn three points for any victory on the final day, which means that the door is still open for Gukesh to win the whole event with a decent performance on the final day. Gukesh had three draws and three defeats on the second day of the event.
