We don’t need coaches driving intensity standards when Virat Kohli is around, says RCB coach Andy Flower

4 min readJun 1, 2026 05:28 PM IST Though Virat Kohli isn’t the captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, their captain Rajat Patidar and head coach Andy Flower have paid rich compliments on the influence the former India captain brings to the franchise. As RCB successfully managed to defend the title, beating Gujarat Titans in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday, Kohli again played an match-winning knock, scoring an unbeaten 75 off 42 deliveries in the chase as he tallied over 650 runs in the season. Though he stepped aside as the captain ahead of the 2024 season, Kohli continues to be in the thick of action and continues to be the face of the franchise. Be it in the field or with the bat, his intensity has been hard to miss and at the same time, he has let Patidar run the show as captain without any interference. And Patidar said Kohli’s presence has allowed him to grow in his role as captain. “Regarding Virat bhai, I think you know, as I said in many …

Coaches thought she was too thin to hold up a bow, now she has Deepika Kumari in her scalp-list

When Kirti Sharma topped the trials for the Indian women’s recurve team for Asian Games with Ankita Bhakat and Kumkum Mohod, her father Vijay Kumar remembered the day in 2022 when he visited a commission agent and took a loan for Rs 60,000 to get her a new recurve bow. A small-time farmer with three acres in Jind district’s Ritoli village in Haryana, he convinced the agent that he would repay the money with future yield. All that mattered to him was her daughter’s joy. “Chhori aise sambal ke rakh rah thi jaise sona ho (She was taking care of it like it was gold),” he tells The Indian Express. Now he says he wants to see a gold medal around her neck in the Asian Games, and slips down the memory lane. A decade ago, Kirti had never heard of archery. She saw a bow for the first time when reputed coach Udham Singh visited the FS Convent school at nearby Pillukhera to spot talented archers and start an academy. Kirti would not go …

New scoring system: Badminton could lose its essence, say top Indian coaches

New scoring system: Badminton could lose its essence, say top Indian coaches

New Delhi: Badminton is set for a significant change as the new 3×15 scoring format (three games to 15 points) gets implemented next year, replacing the current 3×21 system. It is difficult to predict how the game will unfold because the format has not been tested at the sport’s highest level. What it does show is that matches will be shorter, with 18 fewer points that could reduce match time by roughly 30 minutes or more. What it also means is that shuttlers trailing by a few points will be under greater pressure, and comebacks will be that much tougher. And, of course, it will also be less of a test of a shuttler’s physical abilities. Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen. (AP) Games could be faster and more attacking, but the tactical depth in constructing and finishing points while testing an opponent’s mind and movement could witness a dip. There has been considerable debate over the shift, and the badminton fraternity at large has been apprehensive. The Badminton World Federation (BWF), however, says its tests …

‘Horrendous, unwatchable’ LSG written off after Rishabh Pant predicted to miss full season; coaches told to play instead

‘Horrendous, unwatchable’ LSG written off after Rishabh Pant predicted to miss full season; coaches told to play instead

Former Indian batter Krisnamachari Srikkanth tore apart the Lucknow Super Giants team after the IPL franchise sunk to another loss, seeing Royal Challengers Bengaluru chase down their target inside 15 overs in a one-sided contest that exposed the gulf in quality between the squads. Rishabh Pant retires hurt during LSG’s game vs RCB, grimacing in pain. (PTI) LSG’s strength – their top order batting and new-ball bowling – both fell flat in the match, as the issues with an out-of-form lineup including Rishabh Pant and Nicholas Pooran flattered to deceive yet again. Speaking on YouTube, Srikkanth didn’t hold back. First off, Srikkanth predicted that captain Rishabh Pant would be done for the season, after looking in immense pain after being hit in the ribs by a Josh Hazlewood short ball. Pant had to retire hurt – and that makes a struggling LSG batting lineup look even more threadbare. “LSG batted horribly, and it was unwatchable… Rishabh Pant doesn’t look like he’ll play the rest of the season. LSG are a horrendous side. Only their bowling …
