John Brittas writes: Taking India’s message to world

In 1994, when P V Narasimha Rao was Prime Minister, India sent a delegation to the United Nations headquarters in New York led by Farooq Abdullah. India’s permanent representative to the UN at the time was Hamid Ansari, who would later become the country’s Vice President. After the discussions concluded, the Indian delegation came face to face with Pakistan’s permanent representative to theUN, Jamsheed Marker, who posed a sarcastic question to Ansari and his team: “Aren’t there people in Hindustan other than Muslims?” That question perhaps encapsulates India’s syncretic and pluralistic culture — and how starkly it differs from Pakistan’s choice of becoming a religion-based theocratic state after Partition. Notably, this was also the same year that Indian bipartisanship was showcased to the world in Geneva, where Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Salman Khurshid helped thwart a UN resolution against India on the Kashmir issue, returning home to a rousing reception. The public outreach diplomacy under Narendra Modi today echoes that same bipartisanship, though in an unexpected form, as the Prime Minister broke his usual pattern …

Congress Compares Action Against Professor, Minister

New Delhi: Opposition parties Congress and Samajwadi Party have slammed the ruling BJP over the arrest of an Ashoka University professor for a social media post on Operation Sindoor and questioned why Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah, whose remarks on Colonel Sofiya Qureshi sparked a row, had not been arrested yet. In an apparent swipe at the ruling BJP, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has put out a social media post, ostensibly drawing a parallel between the swift police action against the professor and the sluggish probe against the Madhya Pradesh minister. “Hukmarano ki badzubani par bhi azadi, aur kisi ke sach kehne par bhi giraftari,” the Kannauj MP said in a post on X. The lines roughly translate to: “Those in power are free even after speaking ill of others and those who spoke the truth have been arrested.” Ali Khan Mahmudabad, associate professor of political science at Ashoka University, was arrested yesterday after two FIRs were registered against him for a social media post on Operation Sindoor, India’s counterstrike to avenge the Pahalgam …

In growing troubles for Madhya Pradesh Tribal Affairs Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, the state High Court has now ordered a court-monitored investigation, observing that the FIR drafted by the Indore police following his remarks directed at Colonel Sofiya Qureshi did not “inspire the confidence of this court.” A Division Bench comprising Justices Atul Sreedharan and Anuradha Shukla passed the order for a court-monitored investigation on Thursday. “In view of the nature of the case and the manner in which the FIR has been registered, which does not inspire the confidence of this court… Police should investigate fairly in accordance with the law. Under these circumstances, the court feels compelled to ensure that it monitors the investigation without interfering in the independence of the investigating agency. New Delhi: The Supreme Court today sharply rebuked Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah over his controversial remarks directed at Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. The Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, described the minister’s comments as unacceptable and insensitive, stating that individuals occupying constitutional positions should exercise restraint in speech. Chief Justice Gavai questioned the conduct of Mr Shah by asking, “What sort of comments are you making? You should show some sense of sensibility. Go and apologise in High Court.” The remarks, which have drawn widespread criticism from the Opposition, military veterans, and even some members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led to an FIR against the minister. The court refused to stay the High Court’s directive to initiate criminal proceedings against him. “Nothing will happen to you in a day. You know who you are,” the Supreme Court said, rejecting a plea for interim protection from arrest.
