The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested a colonel posted with the Army Ordnance Corps, Eastern Command, in connection with a ₹50 lakh bribery case, agency officials said. The Central Bureau of Investigation filed the FIR in the case on May 18 (AFP FILE) The officer was taken into custody in Kolkata under the Prevention of Corruption Act and is being brought to Delhi for further interrogation, officials said. According to CBI’s first information report (FIR) filed on May 18, Colonel Himanshu Bali, who was posted at the Army Ordnance Corps in Kolkata’s Fort William, was accused of indulging in corrupt practices to favour a Kanpur-based private person and his firm in the award of tenders, approval of substandard samples and clearing of pending and inflated bills in lieu of bribes. Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, Kargil hero and Mahavir Chakra awardee, died of a heart attack at his home on Friday, at the age of 61. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed grief on the passing of Colonel Wangchuk, who had retired and was living in Ladakh. Colonel Sonam Wangchuk’s leadership was instrumental in clearing the enemy along the Chorbat La axis in the Batalik sector (X) During the Kargil War in 1999, he was assigned the critical mission of securing Chorbat La in the Batalik sub-sector, along the Line of Control with Pakistan in Ladakh. He led the personnel from the Ladakh Scouts. Leading from the front, he established key observation posts under harsh conditions, engaged enemy troops, and successfully eliminated several intruders. According to his gallantry award citation, Wangchuk climbed through fresh snow of 1-2m in the Chorbat La sector, where he encountered 3–4 enemy soldiers and killed two of them. An 83-year-old retired Army colonel became the latest victim of online fraud in Bengaluru, losing Rs 56.05 lakh after scammers impersonating Mumbai police officers threatened him with arrest, reported news agency PTI. An FIR was registered at the Central CEN crime police station on November 18, officials said. According to the FIR, the victim received a call on October 27 from a man identifying himself as Mumbai police Inspector Sanjay Pishe, who claimed that a SIM card issued in the complainant`s name had been used to abuse the public, reported PTI. When the elderly man said he was unable to travel to Mumbai for an inquiry, he was connected via video call to a woman identifying herself as senior officer Kavita Pomane, and later to another person named Vishwas, who claimed to be a higher official.
