Netflix signs a three year deal to stream MLB live events and games

Netflix will stream a single game on Opening Night of each season, the Home Run Derby, and one “special event game” each year. In 2026, that will cover the “Field of Dreams” game broadcast from Dyersville, Iowa, on August 13th, 2026, between the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies. The games signed up by all three networks cover a media deal that MLB previously had with ESPN alone, and on NBC’s end, gives it the Sunday Night Baseball game, as well as draft coverage and other games for its networks. Comcast announces a five-year price lock for Xfinity internet plans

Comcast has announced that new customers can choose a five-year, guaranteed price lock-in for its Xfinity internet plans. The plans won’t require an annual contract, and range in price from $55 to $105 per month, according to a release emailed to The Verge. They also include unlimited data. It’s a nice thought, being able to put off the rigamarole of calling my ISP every year or two to beg them to bring me back down to the price that got me in the door in the first place. The plans come with a modem / router combo and a 12-month Xfinity Mobile cellular plan at no extra cost, with extra lines costing $20 per month. In a separate email, Comcast spokesperson Joel Shadle gave The Verge a breakdown of the pricing for cable tiers (download and upload speeds, respectively) that are available with the price lock-in: 400/150 Mbps – $55/month 600/150 Mbps – $70/month 1.1 Gbps/300 Mbps – $85/month 2.1 Gbps/300 Mbps – $105/month Those prices, with the five-year guarantee, are available in all of …

FCC to investigate Comcast for having DEI programs

FCC to investigate Comcast for having DEI programs

Federal Communications Chair Brendan Carr has asked his agency to investigate Comcast’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices, reports Newsmax. “We have received an inquiry from the Federal Communications Commission and will be cooperating with the FCC to answer their questions,” Comcast spokesperson Joelle Terry confirms to The Verge. According to Newsmax, Carr said that FCC is looking for signs that the company’s initiatives have violated federal employment law, writing: “I expect that this investigation into Comcast and its NBCUniversal operations will aid the commission’s broader efforts to root out invidious forms of DEI discrimination across all of the sectors the FCC regulates.” Since taking control of the FCC last month, Carr has threatened to pull broadcast licenses of companies like Disney and CBS for airing content that’s not friendly to Trump and conservatives. He has also ordered investigations into NPR and PBS for “airing commercials,” which fellow Commissioner Anna Gomez told The Verge was a Trump administration “effort to weaponize the power of the FCC.” Carr was a Trump appointee, and he wrote the …

Comcast is spinning off its cable TV business

Comcast is spinning off its cable TV business

Comcast is splitting from its NBCUniversal television arm as the market of cable TV customers shrinks in the age of cord-cutting and TikTok. The US media giant announced plans on Wednesday to spin off the bulk of its cable network channels — including CNBC, MSNBC, Universal Kids, USA Network, E!, Oxygen, Golf Channel, and Syfy — into a separate company. Comcast will retain its reality TV darling Bravo and the Peacock streaming service within its NBC TV business.  The new, currently untitled venture (dubbed “SpinCo” as a placeholder) will be led by NBCUniversal chairman Mark Lazarus, with NBCUniversal’s CFO Anand Kini serving as both its financial and operating head. Non-cable services including Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, and Sports Engine will also be moving to the new company. The separation is expected to take about a year. “This transaction positions both SpinCo and NBCUniversal to play offense in a changing media landscape,” Comcast president Mike Cavanagh said in the announcement. “Taken together, the entirety of NBCUniversal will be on a new growth trajectory, fueled by our …

HBO Max offloads European shows to Comcast and Paramount

The 21 shows include three brand-new European series that have completed production but which are yet to air (ID, The Winner, and Warszawianka) as well as preexisting shows like Lust and Kamikaze. Upcoming shows will be branded as “SkyShowtime Originals” when they release. Existing shows were removed from HBO Max as part of last year’s restructuring so they could be licensed out to other platforms. In total, SkyShowtime says the deal covers 168 episodes and over 150 hours of programming, significantly bulking out the nascent streaming service’s library of local content. SkyShowtime will eventually be available in 22 European markets The deal is part of attempts by HBO Max’s new parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, to find around $3.5 billion in cost savings after its merger in April last year. HBO Max only launched in select European markets months earlier in September 2021, replacing a patchwork of preexisting streaming services like HBO Go and HBO Nordic. And further changes are still to come, with Warner Bros. Discovery intending to replace HBO Max entirely in 2023 …
