Sumukhi Suresh says female comics get cancelled every day: ‘Just read our comments section’ | Web-series News

Sumukhi Suresh became the only Indian comic to represent India at the Netflix Is A Joke Festival, which took place in Los Angeles, California last month. In an exclusive interview with SCREEN, we ask her candidly if Netflix is really a joke, she quips, “No, I was really a big joke on Netflix.” When we ask her to crack a joke on the streaming platform, she shot back, “You know my style, the joke is always on me.” Besides stand-up comedy, Sumukhi continues to dabble in “a thousand things so that I become one interesting person.” Did you fear alienating the foreign audience while doing a very culturally specific set in LA? I don’t think of alienation because the moment you get into that, you have to pander to too many things. And my stand-up is quite anecdotal. If I try and cater to everyone, my story would get diluted. Emotion-vise, it’s universal. That’s the hope. I don’t explain it too much in any language because then the joke gets lost. I just try to …

Zakir Khan reacts to Javed Akhtar’s dig at stand up comics using cuss words in jokes: ‘You can’t be pointing a finger’

Updated on: Dec 21, 2025 11:30 am IST Zakir Khan has reacted to Javed Akhtar’s old dig at comedians, where he had discouraged the use of expletives in comedy. Comedian Zakir Khan has shared a nuanced response to veteran writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar’s old dig at comics who use swear words and cusses in their jokes. Javed Akhtar had said comics who are witty enough don’t need to use swear words in their routines. Zakir says he agrees with the veteran writer’s opinion, but one should not point fingers at individual comics. Zakir Khan has reacted to Javed AKhtar’s old dig at comedians. What Javed Akhtar had said Last year, while appearing on Sapan Verma’s show Chill Sesh, Javed Akhtar was asked his opinion on comics using gaalis (expletives). Comparing abusive language to chilli in food, Akhtar said, “If the conversation is bland, you will put some abusive language in it. Just to give it energy. In Orissa, Bihar, and Mexico—anywhere in the world where there is poverty—people eat a lot of chilli because …

Cosplay, comics and chaos of the best kind at Delhi Comic Con | News Today News

The 13th edition of Delhi Comic Con unfolded earlier this weekend from December 5 to 7, at NSIC Grounds, Okhla, in a blur of colour and craft, where comic geeks and cosplayers poured in. Some came in layered pastel coloured wigs, with Samurai kataanas (swords) as their choice of armour, some with flowing capes and some adding their own touch to their favourite characters. Groups of friends moved around collecting posters, limited editions of comics, badges, keychains with a comic con special bag coined with the phrase ‘Geek collect repeat’. Some stopped at every few steps to pose with a costumed stranger. Families, first timers and seasoned regulars drifted from stall to stall, where every few steps led to a new character or a familiar artist. For artists, the three day event had felt like a reunion. Sumit Kumar, founder of Bakarmax Comics, described the crowd as familiar and warm. According to him the sweetest moment was when a woman came to his stall on a video call with her husband. “She was showing her …

Cancer to comics — Bengal researcher makes art out of science

Cancer to comics — Bengal researcher makes art out of science

Argha Manna. Photo: https://csd.iitgn.ac.in/ From cancer to comics, from scientist to artist, from MIT to IIT — it has been an unusual journey for Bengal boy Argha Manna, who spent a chunk of his youth peering into the microscope but who later realised it was more fun spreading science through graphic art. On Saturday (November 15, 2025), this trained biologist will be conducting a workshop in the city, History in Comic Art, teaching enthusiasts about the methods of researching, reimagining and crafting a visual story. “Art and science inspire each other and are very much connected. It was only in the 19th century that we separated them as disciplines. From the time of Leonardo da Vinci to William Turner, there was no boundary. Da Vinci himself was a brilliant scientist and engineer,” Mr. Manna, 38, told The Hindu. “William Turner was a good friend of Michael Faraday, and many of his atmospheric watercolours were inspired by science (Turner and the Scientists by James Hamilton is one of my favourite reads). There are many examples in …

‘Manhoos, drunkard’ Kunal Kamra gets mercilessly roasted by fellow comics: ‘His favourite position is opposition’ | Bollywood News

‘Manhoos, drunkard’ Kunal Kamra gets mercilessly roasted by fellow comics: ‘His favourite position is opposition’ | Bollywood News

Comedian Kunal Kamra is no stranger to controversy; his latest special caused a stir among a certain section of the audience, who took offence to jokes he made about some politicians. They destroyed the venue where the special was shot, and Kamra was hit with several FIRs. The comic splits his time between Himachal Pradesh and Puducherry, and has been put on the no-fly list by several airlines after an altercation that he had with TV journalist Arnab Goswami. He appeared on the latest episode of Ashish Solanki’s Roast show on YouTube, where a panel of comics joked about Kamra’s edgy comedy, growing ‘irrelevance’, and his ‘saviour’ attitude. Kamra was seen laughing along as his friends and colleagues took aim at him in the roast, a format of stand-up comedy where people poke fun at a person, no holds barred. Solanki described Kamra has ‘manhoos’, citing his appearance on Samay Raina’s equally controversial series India’s Got Latent. The first comic to take shots at Kamra was Sumaira Shaikh, also implied that he is a drunk. …

Julia Garner Admits She Didn’t Know Shalla-Bal From Marvel Comics: ‘It’s Surfing Around Space’

Julia Garner is finally stepping into the world of superheroes, and while excited to play another version of Silver Surfer, the actress admitted she did not know much about Shalla-Bal at first. She will be making her MCU debut in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the Ozark actress mentioned her limited knowledge of major Marvel and DC characters. Julia Garner also added that she was “in disbelief” when offered the role of Shalla-Bal. “I did not know that there was Shalla-Bal, for example, another form of a Silver Surfer that’s not like what you think of the Silver Surfer,” the actress from Apartment 7A stated to the outlet.  Further talking to the outlet, Julia Garner went on to add that the best part of the comics is that it happens to be the same, “when you watch the movies, it’s when it’s surfing around space. Aesthetically, it looks incredible, and I’m just really excited to see what [director] Matt [Shakman] and Marvel are going to do with that.” ALSO READ: The Fantastic …

Takeaways from AP’s report on the religious and moral undercurrents in Superman comics | Hollywood

Takeaways from AP’s report on the religious and moral undercurrents in Superman comics | Hollywood

Superman comics are not overtly religious. Yet faith and morality have been baked into this superhero character who was born Kryptonian, raised Methodist and created by two young Jewish men in 1930s Cleveland. Takeaways from AP’s report on the religious and moral undercurrents in Superman comics Superman’s character has been portrayed in the mold of Christ and Moses given how he constantly upholds the ideals of self-sacrifice, powerful leadership and compassion. While scholars, comic book writers and fans alike are struck by the religious undertones in Superman comics, they all agree that what sets Superman apart is his ability to bring hope in a hopeless world. Friday marks the 87th anniversary of the original superhero’s birth. It also is the date Superman made his debut in an Action Comics issue. There is much excitement in the Superman fanverse this year because of the much-anticipated ‘Superman’ movie directed by James Gunn, starring David Corenswet, the first Jewish actor to play Superman in a major film. On his Instagram page on April 18, 2024, Gunn shared a …

Superman’s latest trailer introduces his team of robot assistants

Superman’s latest trailer introduces his team of robot assistants

During its presentation at this year’s CinemaCon, Warner Bros. shared an extended sneak peek from the new Superman, and the studio has just posted the footage online. For the most part, the video focuses on a very badly-wounded Superman (David Corenswet) begging for his dog, Krypto, to drag him home because he’s unable to walk or fly. While it’s played for comedy, it’s a little morbid to see Superman’s body flopping around like most of his bones are broken. But the scene becomes much weirder (in a good way) as Krypto drags Superman to a very inspired take on the Fortress of Solitude, where a team of cape-wearing medical robots are ready to run triage. Along with a very wild shot of the robots concentrating the sun’s light to heal Superman, the trailer also features longer shots of Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion). Gunn is obviously banking on audiences digging a wilder, more whimsical world of superheroes, …
