First batch of NDA-trained women cadets commissioned as officers | India News

3 min readNew Delhi, PuneJun 14, 2026 01:20 AM IST A YEAR after they walked past the symbolic Antim Pag — the final step — at the National Defence Academy in Pune, the first batch of 17 women cadets trained at the NDA was commissioned on Saturday as officers, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of women’s participation in military service. This is the first time women officers will be joining the forces with a permanent commission. This was made possible by an interim order passed by the Supreme Court in August 2021, while hearing a plea seeking directions to let eligible women take the NDA and Naval Academy entrance exams conducted by the UPSC. The first batch of women cadets joined the NDA in July-August 2022 as part of its 148th course. So far, short service commission women officers could join the forces, and later seek permanent commission after completion of 14 years of service. Samudra Pratap is the first pollution control vessel (PCV) of its kind to be designed and built in India for the Indian Coast Guard. The ship has more than 60 per cent indigenous content, marking a major step in domestic shipbuilding. The vessel is 114.5 metres long and weighs around 4,200 tonnes, making it the largest ship in the Indian Coast Guard fleet. The Indian Navy on Wednesday commissioned INAS 335 ‘Ospreys’, its second naval air squadron to operate MH-60R helicopters, at INS Hansa in Goa, an official statement said. The ceremony was held in the presence of Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). The commissioning of INAS 335 marks a major step in strengthening the Navy’s aviation and maritime combat capabilities. The first MH-60R squadron was commissioned earlier at Kochi, Kerala, in March 2024, the statement said. Republic Day 2025: The tableau of Indian Navy at the 76th Republic Day parade will showcase its three newly commissioned frontline combatants- warships INS Surat and INS Nilgiri, and submarine INS Vaghsheer. While addressing a press conference held at Kota House in the national capital on Wednesday (January 22), the Navy unveiled a model of the tableau featuring the thematic tagline ‘Atmanirbhar Nausena se Rashtra Nirman’. Officials said the Navy’s mixed marching contingent and a band will also participate in the ceremonial parade at Kartavya Path. Controller Personnel Services Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty said the tableau will depict the three platforms commissioned just a week ago in Mumbai, symbolising India’s naval prowess and the spirit of ‘Atmanirbharta’ (self-reliance). The construction of the multi-storeyed buildings to house the tower and the technical block separately are proceeding briskly with over 60% of civil work having been completed. The plan is to complete the civil work in three to four months, said airport authorities.
