Kerala Budget 2026: Despite white paper warning, no plan to cut committed expenditure

After releasing the “Kerala’s Fiscal Health — A Status Report” (white paper), which raised serious concerns over the State’s rising debt burden while strongly criticising the previous Left government for alleged fiscal mismanagement, the new United Democratic Front (UDF) government on Thursday presented its maiden budget. The budget estimates the debt-to-GSDP ratio to come down marginally to 33.5% in 2026-27, compared with 34.87% (actuals, 2024-25) or 34.26% (revised estimates, 2025-26). This is not because debt is expected to fall — the budget in fact projects total outstanding debt to rise 11.6%, from ₹4.89 lakh crore to ₹5.46 lakh crore — but because of its optimistic outlook that GSDP would grow nominally by 14.15% and revenue receipts by 23.8%. Even if the government’s optimistic projections come true, Kerala will indisputably remain among the States with the highest debt burden. As per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) data, the debt-to-GSDP ratio for all States combined stood at 27.01% in 2024-25. The chart below shows the ten States with the highest debt-to-GSDP ratio in 2024-25. However, a …

2 min readJun 3, 2026 10:36 PM IST England captain Ben Stokes said that Jofra Archer is committed to the national team despite the pacer missing the first Test vs New Zealand after wrapping up his Indian Premier League commitments for Rajastha Royals on May 29. On Tuesday, England coach Brendon McCullum also cast doubt on Archer’s availability for the second test, which starts June 17, saying he is having “a little bit of a break at the moment” and needs to be assessed. Due to his unavailability, Archer has faced scrutiny from many experts but skipper Stokes said that it’s a sign of the times with the proliferation of franchise leagues around the world. “A lot of the points that people would be making around Jof and that situation I think are to do with the landscape back when they were playing. It’s completely different now. There’s opportunities for cricketers now that there wasn’t 10, 15, 20 years ago. Yes, in an ideal situation, it would be unbelievably great to have everyone who you …

India committed to stopping Russian oil buys, says US fact sheet| India News

The White House released a fact sheet late on Monday asserting India has committed to stop purchasing Russian oil, reduce tariffs on “certain pulses”, and ending digital services taxes — claims the Indian government has not officially confirmed and that do not appear in the bilateral joint statement released by both countries last week. The White House fact sheet lists “certain pulses” among agricultural products on which India will reduce tariffs—a category not mentioned in the February 7 joint statement. (File Photo/Reuters) The fact sheet and an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Friday both state India “has committed to stop directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil” in exchange for removing a 25% tariff penalty. However, the February 7 India-US joint statement makes no mention of Russian oil purchases or any Indian pledge to halt them. The fact sheet said the two sides reached a framework for an interim deal after Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on a call. India has not confirmed it will eliminate Russian energy purchases. Foreign …
