Neeraj Chopra set for season opener at Doha Diamond League

India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is set to make his return to competitive athletics at the Doha Diamond League on June 19, marking the start of his 2026 season after an extended injury layoff. The entry list released for the season-opening Diamond League meet in Doha confirms Chopra’s participation in a strong men’s javelin field. The two-time Olympic medallist has not competed since the 2025 World Athletics Championships and has spent the past several months recovering from a back injury. His return comes just a day after the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) provided a positive update on his fitness. AFI vice-president Adille Sumariwalla said Chopra has resumed training and is expected to return to competition within days. “Neeraj is now training and getting ready to compete probably in the next 10 days or so. He is recovering well and recovering fast,” Sumariwalla said during a press conference on Sunday. The AFI also named Chopra in India’s 32-member athletics contingent for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be held in Glasgow from July 23 …

Sachin Yadav withdraws from Commonwealth Games 2026, set for elbow surgery

India’s hopes of a strong showing in men’s javelin at the Commonwealth Games 2026 have suffered a major blow after World Championships finalist Sachin Yadav confirmed his withdrawal from the event due to an elbow injury that will require surgery. The 23-year-old has been dealing with the issue since competing at the Indian Athletics Series-3 in New Delhi earlier this year. The injury reportedly worsened following his appearance at the Rome Diamond League and has now forced him to step away from competition indefinitely. The setback comes at a crucial stage of the season and raises doubts over his participation in the upcoming Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, an event that serves as an important qualification pathway for the 2026 Asian Games. Injury halts momentum after breakthrough 2025 season Sachin emerged as one of India’s brightest athletics prospects last year after producing a personal best throw of 86.27m and finishing fourth at the World Athletics Championships, narrowly missing out on a medal. However, the current season has proved far more challenging. The Indian thrower has …

Neeraj Chopra’s advice to young athletes: “Be mentally stable, have patience, don’t have shortcut mindset and be more informed” | Sport-others News

3 min readMar 20, 2026 05:18 PM IST In candid remarks to young athletes, Neeraj Chopra emphasised the growing need for mental strength and patience in modern sports. Speaking in a video released by his foundation about the challenges faced by the new generation, the former Olympic and world champion said, “I feel that the athletes who join us should have patience, which is very less nowadays. They should have patience that everything will be done step by step.” Chopra said for him, success was never just about strength or speed — it was about discipline of the mind. He warned against rushing the process: “They should not have a shortcut mindset.” Instead, he emphasised purpose. “Indian sports need athletes who can set an example. So, we have to show a new path to the next generation of Indian sports.” Looking back, he admitted his own journey lacked that awareness. “In the beginning, we were only doing sports. We did not know what was happening in the world,” he said. Today, he believes young athletes …

AFI sets tough qualification benchmarks for Commonwealth Games 2026

AFI sets tough qualification benchmarks for Commonwealth Games 2026

The Athletics Federation of India has released the official qualification standards for the Commonwealth Games, setting stringent benchmarks across track, field and combined events ahead of the Birmingham successor edition scheduled in 2026. The federation has set entry marks that, in more than 10 events, require athletes to surpass the existing Indian national records to be considered for selection. The decision underlines AFI’s intent to send only medal-capable competitors to the Games and raise India’s overall performance level on the Commonwealth stage. AFI has set these marks based on the 2022 Commonwealth Games, considering the top-4 performances across categories from that edition as the qualifying standard. The standards cover a wide range of disciplines in both men’s and women’s categories. In sprint events, the men’s 100m qualification mark has been fixed at 10.16 seconds, while women will need to clock 11.17 seconds. Middle- and long-distance benchmarks are similarly demanding, with the men’s 1500m standard at 3:30.82 and the women’s 5000m mark set at 14:56.60. Field events also feature aggressive cut-offs. Men’s javelin throwers must achieve …

To safeguard its medals count, India wants to host sports dropped by Glasgow CWG, including badminton, cricket and hockey

After submitting a letter of intent to host the 2036 Olympics and an informal interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG), India is also keen on hosting the 10 disciplines that the 2026 CWG hosts Glasgow dropped from its programme. Six of the 12 disciplines in which India won medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games were dropped for the 2026 edition. Badminton, cricket, hockey, squash, table tennis and wrestling got the axe and the omissions will hit India’s medal count. Archery and shooting won’t be part of the program after getting excluded in 2022 also. However, the sports ministry has now stepped in. “Yes, we are interested in hosting the dropped sports from the 2026 CWG program,” a source in the Sports Ministry revealed. “We are interested as we don’t want our medal tally to suffer. But in the end, the decision lies with the hosts. An informal proposal has been put forward,” the source added. Sports fraternity laments ‘watered down’ CWG 2026

The CGF announced that a total of ten disciplines will be part of the Games, down from 19 in the 2022 Birmingham Games. Major sports dropped from the program include hockey, badminton, shooting, wrestling, cricket, and table tennis.
