Kochi Water Metro ferries berthed at the High Court terminal. As it steps into its third year, the Water Metro is set to expand its operations both within Kerala and across India. The fleet of 19 air conditioned hybrid-electric Water Metro ferries that are operating in Kochi transported a total of 4 million commuters across 10 terminals in the Greater Kochi area, during the past two years. They were from among the twenty-three 100-passenger ferries for which Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) had placed an order with Cochin Shipyard. This first-of-its-kind water transport system in India that aims to introduce 78 ferries in the Greater Kochi area in a phased manner is being implemented by the Kerala government. The Cyberabad traffic police issued a traffic advisory ahead of planned construction work on an reinforced cement concrete (RCC) box drain from Gaffar Nagar (Nectar Garden) junction to Durgam Cheruvu entry plaza. The project, overseen by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), is set to commence on April 24, and is expected to cause significant traffic congestion in the area until completion. The police said that traffic from COD junction towards I-Lab and ITC Kohinoor via Nectar Garden is expected to be particularly slow from 4 p.m. Motorists are advised to use Road No. 45 through the Cable Bridge or other alternate routes. Similarly, between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m., commuters travelling from IKEA and Inorbit Mall towards COD via Nectar Garden will be diverted via Road No. 45 or are advised to opt for routes passing through C-Gate, Gowra and AVASA. On concerns over inadequate patronage for the three feeder buses that were introduced on March 19 on the High Court-MG Road-High Court circular route, KMRL said hope was still not lost since the daily patronage for buses in the corridor had doubled during the past couple of weeks to an average of 773 passengers a day. Buses are operating in the passenger-dense corridor every 10 minutes. A total of 8,573 commuters travelled in the feeder buses in the circular route alone. While 1,556 commuters travelled in them in the first week after their launch on the route, their number more than doubled to 5,415 in the week between March 29 and April 4.
