World Archery proposes Recurve Team reduction at 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

World Archery proposes Recurve Team reduction at 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

World Archery has announced key regulatory changes aimed at preserving global representation in Olympic archery, following the inclusion of compound events at the Los Angeles 2028 Games. Among the most significant changes is a proposal to reduce the number of recurve teams at LA28 from 12 to 8. This adjustment is intended to accommodate compound archery’s Olympic debut while staying within the current athlete quota of 128 competitors (64 men and 64 women). Twelve mixed compound teams—24 athletes in total—will compete for the discipline’s inaugural Olympic medal. The overall cap on athlete participation necessitates a shift in format to preserve the principle of universality and allow broader national participation. “The addition of compound for the LA28 Olympics, with its sixth medal, is a resounding success for the sport,” said World Archery Secretary General Tom Dielen. “An adjustment to the format is necessary to ensure as many world-class countries as possible still have an opportunity to compete in Los Angeles.” Discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are ongoing to finalize the proposal for LA28. Archery World Cup Stage 2: Recurve teams fall short

India’s campaign in the recurve events at the Archery World Cup Stage 2 ended in disappointment as both the men’s and women’s teams bowed out without medals. However, a string of strong performances in the compound section has kept the country’s hopes alive with two confirmed medals. The men’s recurve team of Dhiraj Bommadevara, Atanu Das, and Tarundeep Rai fell short in the bronze medal match, losing 3-5 to the USA. Despite a spirited comeback after trailing 0-4, the Indian trio managed to take the third set 55-54, but the fourth ended in a 56-56 draw, ending their medal bid. Earlier in the semifinals, the Indians were edged out by France in a nerve-wracking shoot-off, 4-5 (25-26). In both knockout matches, crucial arrows landing in the 7 and 8 rings at key moments proved costly. Meanwhile, the women’s recurve team of Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat, and Anshika Kumari, who had qualified as the third-best side, faced a shock exit in the pre-quarterfinals. They lost 4-5 in a shoot-off against 14th-seeded Mexico. Despite recovering from a …

At a tournament where Indian legend Limba Ram participated, Singh, a former national recurve champion, would buy four Hoyt Compound bows costing more than $500 each. Compound events have been part of World Championships since 1996 but while recurve archery re-entered the Olympics in 1972, there was no space for the other variant in the biggest sporting spectacle in the world till Wednesday, when World Archery announced the introduction of a mixed team compound event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. “I was fascinated by the mechanical pull rings on the compound bow. The same year, I decided to shift from recurve to compound and competed at the 2004 National Championships in the first-ever compound events in the country. Since then, it has been a long journey for compound archers in India and to see a compound mixed team event at the Olympics is like getting upgraded from second class …
