LPG domestic cylinder now costs ₹957.50 in Chennai, consumers express shock

Image used for representation purpose only. | Photo Credit: The Hindu With the latest ₹29 hike in the price of a cylinder of domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), in Chennai, a cylinder now costs ₹ 957.50 from Sunday (June 7, 2026). The last price revision was done on March 7, when it went up by ₹60 per refill. In a span of three months it has gone up by ₹89/14.2 kg cylinder. Customers who have already booked their refills but have not received the same, will have to pay the revised rate. Their bills would be cancelled and fresh ones made. If consumers had made the payment online, they can pay the difference in the amount to the delivery boys. Consumer activist T. Sadagopan said this revision was an early morning shocker. The whole of last year, OMCs made a profit of 150% but this year they say they cannot absorb the losses, which is unfair. The poor consumers are already burdened with high petrol and diesel costs. Excise duty cuts on fuel offer no real relief to consumers, claims Congress

Excise duty cuts on fuel offer no real relief to consumers, claims Congress

The Congress on Friday criticised the Centre’s decision to cut excise duty on fuel, arguing that the move does not translate into any tangible relief for consumers or fuel dealers. The government recently reduced excise duty on petrol to Rs 3 per litre and completely exempted diesel from excise duty, presenting the decision as a measure to ease the burden of rising global fuel prices. However, the Congress contends that the reduction is largely symbolic and does not impact retail prices. ‘Relief Exists Only in Narrative,’ Says Pawan Khera Senior party leader Pawan Khera said that despite headlines suggesting a drop in fuel prices, there has been no actual change in what consumers pay at petrol pumps. Taking to social media, Khera remarked that people expecting relief in their daily expenses would be disappointed. He asserted that fuel prices for both dealers and end consumers remain unchanged despite the government’s announcement. Reduction Targets Oil Companies, Not Consumers Khera clarified that the cut applies primarily to the “special additional excise duty,” a levy paid by oil …
