Four days after a 21-year-old youth drowned in the swimming pool at Eklavya Stadium in Jind, the police arrested the swimming coach, contractor and manager on charges of negligence. Police said the investigation in the case is underway and the swimming pool has been closed. They were later released on bail. The incident happened on night of May 14 when the victim, Gaurav, had gone for swimming during evening but did not return home till around 8.30 pm. The family started searching for him and reached the pool area only to find victim’s body floating on water. He was taken to a hospital and was declared brought dead. The Karnataka Lokayukta on Saturday caught Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Shirahatti MLA Dr Chandru Lamani red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe from a contractor, officials said. Dr Chandru Lamani The MLA, along with his personal assistants Manjunath Valmiki and Gurunayak, was subsequently arrested and is being currently interrogated, they added. According to officials, Lamani allegedly demanded a sum of ₹11 lakh as commission from Class-1 contractor Vijay Poojar to award a ₹1 crore roadside retaining wall construction project. Unwilling to pay the bribe, Poojar approached the Lokayukta and filed a formal complaint. Officials said an audio recording had surfaced two days earlier in which Lamani was purportedly heard demanding money. “We had secured audio evidence indicating a demand for illegal gratification. Based on that, an FIR was registered and a trap was planned,” Lokayukta SP Siddalingappa said. “The accused were apprehended while accepting the advance amount. 3 min readShimlaJan 29, 2026 05:03 PM IST The National Green Tribunal (NGT) Thursday awarded Rs 47.14 lakh as environmental compensation to the owner of a trout fish farm in Kullu district for damage caused due to illegal dumping of muck and debris during bridge construction over Haripur Nallah. The damage was caused during the time period between 2018-22. The judgment was delivered by a bench comprising NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Expert Member Dr A Senthil Vel. Kushal Mehta, Owner, Himalayan Trout Fish Farm, moved the Tribunal in 2020. Earlier, the applicant also filed a petition in the Himachal Pradesh High Court, but the petition was dismissed. The Tribunal also held that the Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department (HPPWD) and its contractor, which were listed as Respondents number-2 and 3, had violated Section 24 of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, resulting in pollution of the stream, death of thousands of trout fish and destruction of fish eggs at the downstream fish farm. A 35-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly impersonating a Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) employee and attempting to extort Rs 10,000 from a contractor engaged in debris removal work at Sector-14, the Gurgaon city police said. The accused has been identified as Hitesh Khatri, a resident of New Colony. The matter came to light after an FIR was registered on Friday under sections 204 (personating a public servant), 308(2) (extortion by putting a person in fear of accusation of an offence punishable with imprisonment for ten years or more), and 62 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
