Pune lab’s DME innovation may reshape India’s household cooking fuel sector

Every day, millions of Indian households rely on LPG cylinders for cooking, but scientists at the CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune, are working on a homegrown alternative called Dimethyl Ether (DME) that could reduce India’s dependence on imported fuel, ANI reported.  What is DME and why it matters Developed at CSIR-NCL, DME is being positioned as a clean fuel that can be produced domestically using coal, biomass, and methanol. Researchers say it closely matches LPG in usage and can help ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here. Centre ensuring steady flow of cooking gas during turbulent times: Nirmala Sitharaman

Replying to a debate in Rajya Sabha on the Appropriation Bill, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday that the Government is ensuring steady availability of cooking gas even amid turbulent times. She said domestic production of LPG is also being stepped up to address any situation. The Minister maintained that country has enough fertiliser stocks for Kharif crops and global bidding to procure nutrients for the next Rabi season will start soon. “The West Asia crisis has come up with a new challenge, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stress on self-reliance and increasing production to meet India’s basic demands has helped the country,” she said. “Overwhelmingly, 90% of the 65% LPG imports come through the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, there was speculation about whether we would get it or not. There are enough reports on how we are ensuring a steady flow during these turbulent times,” she said adding that the country has been building up its LPG capacities and even “at this time the way we have ramped up domestic …

LPG at Rs 5,000? Kharge and Nadda clash in RS as West Asia crisis triggers ‘anarchy’ over cooking gas

3 min readNew DelhiUpdated: Mar 16, 2026 06:40 PM IST Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday held the government responsible for the LPG crisis by not taking preemptive measures, which was strongly countered by Union Minister J P Nadda, who accused Congress of trying to create anarchy in the country and indulging in politics instead. Raising the matter during the Zero Hour, Kharge accused the government of not doing advance planning and making alternative arrangements for LPG imports as the government “knew” that the West Asia crisis could impact critical maritime routes and energy supplies. Nadda, the Leader of the House, hit back, accusing Opposition parties, especially Congress, of not standing with the people but of instigating them. “The LPG crisis has caused widespread panic across the entire nation. Its impact is severely affecting the poor and vulnerable sections, the middle class, ordinary households, restaurants, hostels, and commercial users,” Kharge said. “Many establishments have limited or completely halted their operations. Some are purchasing at exorbitant rates, over Rs 5,000 per cylinder,” …

Representational image If you have noticed the flame on your stove turning a distinct orange or if the weight of your cylinder feels suspiciously light, you are not alone in your concern. Amid the current energy landscape in March 2026, managing your cooking gas has become as much about strategy as it is about maintenance. With new government regulations now in place to ensure fair distribution, knowing exactly how to handle a low LPG cylinder is essential for every Indian household. The 2026 Booking Rule: The 25-Day Gap The most critical fact to remember right now is the mandatory 25-day gap between bookings. To prevent hoarding and manage the current supply pressure, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has extended the minimum …
