Congress leader Husain Dalwai says Muslims not bound to accept cow as ‘mother’ amid national animal debate

Amid the debate over granting cows the status of a “national animal”, Congress leader Husain Dalwai on Tuesday said that while some people may consider cows as mothers, Muslims are not obliged to accept that belief.  Speaking to IANS, Dalwai said, “Earlier, the cow was referred to as a state animal, and now it is being called a mother. Even if Muslims take a step back, there is still an attempt to push them further. You may call the cow a mother, but we consider it an important animal of this country and a state animal. What is wrong with that? Those who described it as a state animal have said the right thing.” Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here. 4 min readMay 27, 2026 07:55 AM IST In the middle of his second round clash at Norway Chess against Vincent Keymer, Magnus Carlsen walked in the confessional booth for what was his second pitstop of the day. Over the years, the confessional booth — an innovation seen only at this tournament — has delivered multiple moments of virality. Carlsen, looking thoroughly displeased with himself today, delivered one more moment of social media virality. So disappointed was Carlsen with himself that he invented a phrase on the spot to express what he was feeling. Carlsen thought his game against Keymer “felt like a cow that was ashamed of its body”. He then called it an “udder embarrassment”. The world no 1 felt like every move he was making felt like a “positional mistake”. A few hours later, the game ended in a draw, but not before it saw multiple mistakes from both players, none more glaring than Carlsen missing a checkmating opportunity. So dejected was Carlsen at not winning the classical game on Tuesday, that …

BJP national minority morcha president Jamal Siddiqui said that as per Islam, ‘qurbani’ or sacrifice of animals on Bakrid is considered ‘wajib’ or required and not ‘fard’ or strictly mandatory. He further appealed to the community to protect cows during the festival. “Bakrid is the festival of renunciation and sacrifice, it should be observed with mutual love and harmony. I urge all Muslim brethren not to sacrifice any prohibited animal, and to especially protect the cow which a large section of the people of the country and especially our Hindu brothers consider as a mother,” said Siddiqui, who hails from the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh’s stronghold of Nagpur in Maharashtra. “Our Hindu brothers’ religious feelings are attached to cows, and keeping that in mind, there should be no …

‘Avoid cow sacrifice on Bakrid’: Former Babri Masjid litigant Iqbal Ansari

In a significant move aimed at strengthening communal harmony ahead of Eid al-Adha (Bakrid), Iqbal Ansari, a prominent local figure and former litigant in the Babri Masjid land dispute case, urged the Muslim community to completely avoid cow sacrifice during the festival. Iqbal Ansari pointed out that cow slaughter aligns with neither Islamic scriptures nor the Indian Constitution. ( Sunil Ghosh / Hindustan Times/For Representative Purposes Only) Ansari has also formally requested the government to designate the cow as India’s “national animal” and “national heritage”, arguing that granting legal constitutional status would put a definitive end to cases of cow-related vigilantism and mob lynching. Speaking to ANI regarding his initiative, Ansari stressed the importance of respecting the religious sentiments of neighbours to safeguard the country’s social fabric. “This is a matter concerning our nation, the Hindu faith, and Islam. While sacrifice has been an integral part of Islamic traditions for generations during Eid al-Adha, we must respect the laws governing our land. Muslims should never sacrifice animals that are legally restricted. In India, our Hindu …
