CPI(M)’s support for Vellappally resulted in loss of minority votes, says party’s Idukki district committee

CPI(M)’s support for Vellappally resulted in loss of minority votes, says party’s Idukki district committee

The CPI(M) district committee meeting on Wednesday criticised the State leadership, stating that the party’s support for SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan cost the LDF minority votes in the assembly election. Representatives argued that the leadership’s defence of Mr Natesan and his statements resulted in a total loss of minority support. “The CPI(M) State leadership failed to distance itself from the statements made by Mr Natesan, which signalled to voters that the leadership supported him,” members said. The representatives also pointed out the organisational weaknesses of the CPI(M)’s youth wing, the DYFI. “Over the years, the DYFI has faced a decline in organisational growth and failed to attract the new generation of youth. The organisation failed to arrange diverse programs to engage young people. For the past 10 years, the DYFI’s only consistent activity has been the distribution of pothichoru (food parcels) in hospitals,” representatives said. The CPI(M) Idukki district meeting, convened to review the poll debacle, levelled serious criticism against the CPI(M) State leadership. However, representatives have not yet directed harsh criticism toward …

His remarks come days after Mr. Rahaman resigned from his post in the CPI(M) and publicly aired his differences with the State leadership.  The veteran CPI(M) leader further added that individual exits from the party cannot weaken the party. “CPI(M) is not that weak that it will end because some people have resigned… We can only try to save people (referring to Mr Rahaman) when they are drowning, but …

The alleged suicide of a college student at the Wayanad campus of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, allegedly after intense ragging, has put the ruling CPI(M) on back foot over the alleged involvement of activists of its student wing, the Students Federation of India (SFI). J S Sidharthan, 20, a second-year student of BVSc and Animal Husbandry at the University, was found hanging in the toilet of the men’s hostel on February 18. The case, registered as an unnatural death, took a turn after the post-mortem report mentioned alleged torture and wounds sustained by the victim days before the death. Twelve students, including his classmates and seniors, were suspended from the university, which acted on the report of an anti-ragging cell. Those suspended included the college union president, a union member, and the SFI unit secretary. Wayanad police on Wednesday arrested six students, though officers say SFI leaders are absconding.
