Consumers in Pune and surrounding markets now need to shell out an extra Rs 2 per litre for pouched milk as the Pune District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union, which sells milk and dairy products under the brand name Katraj Dairy, has decided to hike its prices. A press note issued on Tuesday by Manoj Limaye, managing director of the union, said the decision was taken in view of the increased rate of transportation, processing and other costs. The hike came into effect on Tuesday. Following the price rise, full cream milk now costs Rs 74 per litre, while toned milk costs Rs 64 per litre. The union, on average, collects around 2-2.5 lakh litres of milk per day and most of it is sold as pouched milk in Pune and surrounding markets. Earlier this month, the union had increased the cost of milk procurement from farmers by Rs 2 for milk with 3.5 per cent fat, and 8.5 per cent Solid Not Fat (SNF).
