With home titles proving elusive, India Open 2026 presents the country’s top shuttlers with chance to prove big-match credentials

With home titles proving elusive, India Open 2026 presents the country’s top shuttlers with chance to prove big-match credentials

Just seven India Open titles out of the 70 available across 5 categories in the most defining decade and a half of Indian badminton, leads to the question: Have Indian shuttlers made the most of the ‘home advantage’? The biggest names – Saina Nehwal (twice), PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, Lakshya Sen and Jwala Gutta-V Diju (back in 2010) – have no doubt etched their names on the winners’ board. Since back in the day in 2010 when it was a mere Grand Prix event right until its current Super 750 status, Indians have made a total of 21 semifinals too, falling at the penultimate or final hurdle, thus not winning a title.  But despite Delhi cultivating a fairly loyal watching base that can slowly be persuaded to shell out ticket money to watch badminton (good sport deserves a paying public, not passes), it’s been difficult to keep the home crowd invested with partisan interest till Finals Sunday. As has been the trend, Satwik-Chirag have salvaged the situation when singles stars …

Squash: Abhay Singh, less than a year away from potentially facing Pakistan again at Asian Games, looks to build international credentials | Sport-others News

When Abhay Singh defeated squash World No 5 and 2016 World champion, Egyptian Karim Gawad, on a glorious September day at the Qatar Classic, his mind had started whirring towards a challenge 12 months away. A crackling rivalry with Pakistan. The year-long countdown to the Nagoya Asian Games next September has started. And though Singh is now the highest-ranked Indian on the PSA circuit, had scalped World Nos 17 and No 5 in the last few months, and is easing into the Platinum grade top-tier squash events, the Chennaiite knows the Pakistan clash beckons from the horizon. To revise memories, Singh went down a tunnel of embarrassment and darkness when he lost in the individual groups at Hangzhou, cursing himself for letting his teammates down at the 2022 Asiad. The turnaround time to redemption was three evenings away, as he won a crucial team event decider against Pakistan. Story continues below this ad The chirping in those three days on social media and a throwaway “aaj India ko buri tarah se haraenge” comment had famously …

Shubman Gill’s Credentials Doubted, Overseas Numbers “Not Healthy As Batter, Let Alone As Captain”

Shubman Gill’s Credentials Doubted, Overseas Numbers “Not Healthy As Batter, Let Alone As Captain”

Shubman Gill era has begun in Indian cricket. The 25-year-old star was named the captain of the Indian cricket squad for the Tour of England starting June 20. At 25, Gill has become one of the youngest players to hold the position in recent years. Though he lacks captaincy experience in the red-ball format, he has led India in a five-match T20I assignment in Zimbabwe in 2024. Gill has also been captaining the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gill has also served as vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is. He was Rohit Sharma‘s deputy in India’s victorious Champions Trophy campaign in the UAE in February 2025. In Test cricket, Gill has played 32 matches and scored 1,893 runs, including five centuries. Former India opener Aakash Chopra has called Shubman Gill as India Test captain as a ‘investment of faith’. “Lots (of challenges) actually in Test cricket. If it were ODI format, we would have said absolutely fine. He is the heir apparent. He is annointed as the vice captain for a …

In letter to Patnaik, BJD veteran flags attempt to ‘hijack party’, dent on secular credentials | Latest News India

Bhubaneswar, Warning BJD chief Naveen Patnaik of attempts to “hijack the party”, senior leader Ranendra Pratap Swain said the internal fiasco on the Waqf Amendment Act has raised serious questions about “our stand on secularism”. In letter to Patnaik, BJD veteran flags attempt to ‘hijack party’, dent on secular credentials In a letter to Patnaik, which was made public on Monday, Swain said the BJD must reaffirm its commitment to both social justice and secularism. “The recent discontent among party workers over the Waqf Bill controversy has raised serious questions about our stand on secularism. In this context, I sincerely urge that the party must reaffirm its commitment to both social justice and secularism as its core planks and take the cadre into full confidence moving forward,” the eight-term MLA said in the letter. “Sir, this is a moment to reclaim our ideological legacy and reassert our identity as a party rooted in Social Justice-with secularism and regional dignity as its pillars. Ashwin Picks Varun Chakravarthy for PoTT in CT2025; Discards Ravindra’s Credentials

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has reckoned Varun Chakravarthy was the ‘biggest difference’ in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 as his performance ensured Rohit Sharma-led side to victory. Varun played only three matches in the ongoing Champions Trophy and picked 9 wickets and emerged as the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. In the finals, Varun has got the opening wicket of Will Young and dismissed Glenn Phillips, further tilting the game’s balance in India’s favour. Ashwin should have been the Player of the Tournament as he was the biggest difference, bringing in the ‘X factor’. However, Rachin Ravindra was awarded the Player of the Tournament award for scoring 263 runs in four matches, including two centuries. “Whatever said and done, the Player of the Tournament, in my view, was Varun Chakaravarthy. He didn’t play the entire tournament. He was such a big difference.” “If Varun Chakaravarthy wasn’t there, I think this game would have been very different. He brought that X-factor and the novelty factor. If I were the judge, I would have given …
