Rs 50,000 rewarded criminal Mehtab killed in Shamli

A Rs 50,000 reward-carrying accused was killed in a police encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district early on Friday, while his accomplice escaped under cover of darkness.  A police sub-inspector was also injured by a gunshot during the exchange of fire, officials said.According to the Uttar Pradesh Police, the encounter took place near a tubewell close to the Khandrawali Culvert under the jurisdiction of Kandhla Police Station during a joint operation carried out by teams from Adarsh Mandi and Kandhla police stations. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari faces 25 criminal cases, mostly filed since he defected from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 2020, while his annual income more than doubled over the last five years from ₹8,13,170 in 2020-2021 to ₹17,38,590 in 2024-2025, according to the affidavit he filed with the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s 2021 poll affidavit showed only one criminal case pending against him. (X) The affidavit shows the value of Adhikari’s moveable and immovable assets declined over the last five years. He had movable assets worth ₹59,31,647 in 2021, which dropped to 24,57,600 in 2026. His immovable assets were worth 61,30,000 in 2021, which declined to 46,21,102 in 2026. Of the 23 MPs re-elected between 2004 and 2019 Lok Sabha polls, 12 of them have declared criminal cases against them, poll rights body ADR has said in its new analysis. Top re-elected MPs with the highest increase in assets include Jigajinagi Ramesh Chandappa, Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, and Rao Inderjit Singh, whose assets witnessed substantial growth over the years. The analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and the National Election Watch showed that nine of these MPs have serious criminal cases, including charges related to murder, attempt to murder, and dacoity. The analysis, based on the self-sworn affidavits of 23 re-elected MPs, highlights significant disparities in various aspects, raising questions about transparency and accountability in the political sphere. Out of the 23 re-elected MPs analysed, 52 per cent have declared criminal cases against thems and 39 per cent of these MPs have serious criminal cases, it said.
