Encounter actions in U.P. undermining criminal justice system, making society barbaric, says former U.P. top police officials

Amid the debate over the encounters in Uttar Pradesh, after the State government released figures of such operations, retired Director General of Police rank officials from U.P. on Saturday (June 6, 2026) said through this policy the whole society is “made barbaric”, adversely affecting the growth of the democratic system, adding that these encounter actions fundamentally undermine the criminal justice system and foster a culture of lawlessness.   “Our society has unfortunately given social recognition to such acts of encounters. During the V.P. Singh regime, a Maro Maro [hit hit] campaign was launched in early 1980s. But, for the first time, the State in the last nine years under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule has made encounters an instrument of controlling crime. In a Ghaziabad village, the mother of the victim demanded the accused body must be shown to the family after his encounter. People are accepting encounters as legal, moral acts, which in reality is a barbaric medieval act. Instant justice through encounter, is an extrajudicial killing, a black chapter for the society. Through the …

‘When you have crowds this big, criminal activities follow’

3 min readUpdated: May 22, 2026 04:14 PM IST With the official colourful FIFA WC football in his left hand, and slightly clueless about what to do about it, Department of Homeland Security secretary Markwayne Mullin shot a warning video saying, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers will be “out there every day” during the next month of the World Cup tournament. Posting on the US ICE X handle, Mullin bunched together enforcement to counter counterfeit tickets and merchandise with human trafficking. “When a lot of people dont think when they start talking about the World Cup is what about the counterfeit products that come in or human trafficking? When you have crowds this big, criminal activities follow. Well ICE and HSI are going to be out there every single day fighting back against counterfeit tickets, human trafficking and drugs smuggling, counterfeit products. They’re going to be working hand in hand with CBP.” While the massive football seemed to stop him from gesticulating as he paced front and back, authorities told ABC7News that “there were similar …

What does India’s proposed criminal anti-doping provisions actually say?

What does India’s proposed criminal anti-doping provisions actually say?

India is preparing for a major shift in how it tackles doping in sport. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has placed proposed amendments to the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022, in the public domain for consultation, seeking to criminalise organised doping-related activities such as trafficking, illegal supply, administration and commercial promotion of banned substances. The consultation process will remain open until June 18, 2026. At the heart of the proposal is a clear message: the government no longer wants anti-doping enforcement to focus only on athletes who test positive. Instead, it wants to target the wider ecosystem that enables doping, traffickers, illegal suppliers, organised syndicates, unscrupulous coaches, support personnel and commercial operators profiting from banned substances. The ministry said the proposed amendments are aimed at addressing the “growing organised ecosystem” involved in the trafficking and illegal distribution of performance-enhancing substances and methods in sport. Why is this proposal significant? For years, India’s anti-doping system has largely functioned within the sporting framework. Athletes who failed tests were punished through suspensions, disqualifications, stripped medals and bans …

The Adani Group denied the allegations at the time, calling them baseless. “The Department of Justice has reviewed this case and has decided, in its prosecutorial discretion, not to devote further resources to these criminal charges against individual defendants,” prosecutors wrote in a court filing. Judge Nicholas Garaufis must still approve the request. Lawyers for Adani and his …

Delhi HC initiates criminal contempt against Kejriwal and AAP leaders

The Delhi High Court on Thursday initiated criminal contempt proceedings against former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and several other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, observing that a “coordinated campaign” had been carried out to scandalise the judiciary in connection with the excise policy case, news agency IANS reported. Passing a detailed order, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said the social media posts, videos, and public statements made against her after she refused to recuse from hearing the matter had crossed the line between fair criticism and criminal contempt. “The contemnors did not merely express disagreement but carried out a campaign of vilification not only against this sitting judge but the entire judiciary,” Justice Sharma observed. Apart from Kejriwal, the court issued contempt notices against former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Member of Parliament Sanjay Singh, and AAP leaders Saurabh Bharadwaj, Vinay Mishra, and Durgesh Pathak. Justice Sharma said that while judges are trained to accept fair criticism and dissent, “remaining silent is not judicial restraint” when a calculated attempt is made to scandalise the judiciary. …
