Europe’s cookie nightmare is crumbling

Instead of having to click accept or reject on a cookie pop-up for every website you visit in Europe, the EU is preparing to enforce rules that will allow users to set their preferences for cookies at the browser level. “People can set their privacy preferences centrally — for example via the browser — and websites must respect them,” says the EU. “This will drastically simplify users’ online experience.” This key change is part of a new Digital Package of proposals to simplify the EU’s digital rules, and will initially see cookie prompts change to be a simplified yes or no single-click prompt ahead of the “technological solutions” eventually coming to browsers. Websites will be required to respect cookie choices for at least six months, and the EU also wants website owners to not use cookie banners for “harmless uses” like counting website visits, to lessen the amount of pop-ups. The sheer amount of cookie pop-ups across Europe means people often just click any button to get access to a website, simply because of the …

Ding Liren crumbling is most likely scenario

Ding Liren crumbling is most likely scenario

The momentum in the 2024 World Chess Championship match swung decisively on Sunday after Gukesh defeated Ding Liren with white pieces in Game 11 to take a 6-5 lead. There are just three more games left. Under severe time trouble in Game 11, Ding Liren blundered on Move 28 when he retreated his queen to c8 (28.Qc8). That move proved to be decisive as he resigned one move later. Ding Liren’s predecessor on the world champion’s throne — Magnus Carlsen — predicted after Game 11 that the “most likely scenario was that Ding will crumble” after the defeat. “We’ll see if Ding has any fight in him. Will Ding crumble now? I think that’s most likely the most likely scenario. Whether he will put any pressure on Gukesh, whatsoever? Hard to say. Kinda doubt it. Gukesh has been very good at neutralising Ding with black pieces. Maybe Ding will put in a shift in the two white games remaining. But I am not optimistic on his behalf,” Carlsen said on Take Take Take. INTERACTIVE: Game …

UK strikes and crumbling health service add troubles to Rishi Sunak government | World News

British rail workers will walk off the job much of this week, paralyzing transport and adding to the troubles piling up for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government. Union workers will strike for five days starting Wednesday, snarling the usual return to work following the holidays and interrupting January sales that are crucial for retailers. The protests stem from growing anger over the tightest cost-of-living squeeze in memory. Inflation reached a four-decade high last year, and wages aren’t keeping pace, especially in public services. Nurses and ambulance drivers plan to strike later in the month as officials warn the National Health Service is struggling to cope with flu and Covid outbreaks. Sunak’s response has been to hold the line against what he sees as inflation-busting pay raises. He’s blaming surging prices on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which cut off supplies of energy and wheat, boosting the cost of electricity and food. His New Year’s message warned of tough times ahead. “I am not going to pretend that all our problems will go away in the new …
