TVK-led government failed to secure Cauvery water for kuruvai cultivation: Edappadi Palaniswami

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday (June 18, 2026) alleged that the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government had failed to take adequate steps to secure Cauvery water for kuruvai cultivation in the Delta districts, causing hardship to farmers and depriving agricultural labourers of employment opportunities. Speaking to reporters after the Governor’s address in the Assembly, Mr. Palaniswami said the Mettur Dam could not be opened on June 12 as the storage level was inadequate. “The TVK government has Congress members in the Cabinet. It could have used their support to hold talks with the Karnataka Chief Minister and secure the water due to Tamil Nadu as per the monthly schedule,” he said. Mr. Palaniswami said although the government had announced 436 schemes across various departments at a Cabinet meeting, they did not find mention in the Governor’s address. Joseph Vijay on Friday (June 12, 2026) announced a Kuruvai Special Package for paddy cultivation in the Cauvery delta districts and other areas of the State at a cost of ₹134.83 crore. According to an official release, paddy is cultivated in 52.72 lakh acres across the State. In the Cauvery delta region comprising Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai districts, and certain parts of Cuddalore, Tiruchi, and Ariyalur districts, paddy is cultivated annually on 20.65 lakh acres, of which an average of 5.14 lakh acres is cultivated during the Kuruvai season. In other districts, paddy cultivation is undertaken annually on 32.07 lakh acres, of which an average of 5.48 lakh acres is cultivated during the Kar, Kuruvai, and Sornavari seasons. Usually, the Mettur dam is opened on the customary date of June 12 every year to facilitate Kuruvai paddy cultivation in the delta districts. In a major anti-narcotics operation, security forces destroyed a large-scale illegal ganja cultivation spread across forest land in Sonamura subdivision of Tripura on Wednesday. The illegal cultivation was spread across nearly 65 acres of forest land, officials said. (File Photo/ANI) Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a joint team conducted raids and search operations from 7:45 am to 5:00 pm on January 29 in the forest areas of Kamalanagar, Krishnadola, Dulunga and Bijoy Nagar. During the operation, security personnel detected and destroyed 41 ganja plantation plots. Officials said approximately 1.80 lakh mature ganja plants were destroyed on the spot. The estimated market value of the destroyed narcotic crop is around ₹27 crore. The illegal cultivation was spread across nearly 65 acres of forest land, officials added. The joint operation was conducted by personnel from Sonamura Police Station, along with the 81 Battalion BSF, the 5th, 9th, 11th, and 14th Battalions TSR, the 14th Battalion Women TSR, the 35 Battalion Assam Rifles, and other sister security agencies. Venkatesh has said that Chamarajanagar district was once famous for sericulture and that farmers’ interest in silk cultivation has declined over a period of time following improvements in irrigation projects. Also, there has been a decline in silk production even in countries like China and Japan, he added. Mr. Venkatesh, who is also the Minister in charge of Chamarajanagar district, was speaking to reporters during his visit to the sericulture development centre at B.R. Hills on Wednesday. The Minister said silk farming has picked up in North Karnataka as farmers there are showing more interest. The government of Punjab seeks to promote litchi cultivation in the state to tackle the declining level of underground water in the state. The farmers are encouraged to shift to horticulture from water-intensive crops like paddy and wheat. Chandigarh: The state of Punjab is emerging as one of the major litchi exporting destinations in India, as it started the fruit’s supply to England from districts of Pathankot, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur in 2024. Last year in June, Punjab Horticulture Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra flagged off the first consignment of ‘litchi’ from the state.  Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), in collaboration with the Horticulture Department, exported the first consignment. In an update, the minister had said that the production of litchi, cultivated over 3,250 hectares, will touch 13,000 metric tonnes. District Collector Sumit Kumar highlighted the potential of oil palm cultivation in the eastern mandals to provide economic viability to farmers.
