Smallest nation with the biggest point

Smallest nation with the biggest point

For ignorant millennials, the FIFA World Cup was a better atlas than geography lessons at school. Korea-Japan 2002 taught us where Henri Camara’s Senegal was located. Germany 2006 made it impossible not to know about Andriy Shevchenko’s Ukraine. South Africa 2010 prompted a generation to learn about Asamoah Gyan’s Ghana. Had USA-Mexico-Canada 2026 been played in that era, we would have run into a problem. We would have scoured through the world map to find Curacao — the team that restricted Ecuador to a 0-0 stalemate on Sunday — and found nothing. They are a tiny dot on a physical map. Senior & Co., Curaçao’s oldest distillery and the producer of the original Blue Curaçao liqueur, acknowledges the irony on its website: “The funny thing is that now many people know the term Blue Curaçao, but don’t know that Curaçao is also an island.” And you would not be accused of geographical blasphemy for the same. The island has a population of 158,000. Ranked 189th. They have an area of 444 square kilometres. ALSO READ …

Curacao’s Eloy Room, goalkeeper without a club, just broke a World Cup record

Curacao’s Eloy Room, goalkeeper without a club, just broke a World Cup record

In the dying minutes of a World Cup qualifier against Jamaica, with Curaçao 90 minutes from their first-ever World Cup, the referee pointed to the spot. Eloy Room turned to him and said: “It doesn’t matter if you give the penalty. I’ll save it anyway.” The referee looked at him like he was crazy. VAR overturned it. He didn’t need to find out if he was right. That is the kind of man who stood in the Kansas City goal on Saturday night and made 15 saves against Ecuador. The most by any goalkeeper in a World Cup match in regulation since saves became an official statistic in 1966. More than Ramon Quiroga’s 13 for Peru in 1978. Equal to Tim Howard’s total against Belgium in 2014, though Howard needed extra time to get there. Room did it in 90 minutes, representing a nation of 150,000 people whose stadium capacity he had just filled twice over. Ecuador had 28 shots. Curaçao won a point. Their first ever. Lesley Room is from Curaçao and has been …

15 saves in 90 minutes! Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room sets World Cup record

2 min readJun 21, 2026 08:18 AM IST Just days after Curacao’s horrific initiation with a 1-7 drubbing at the hands of Germany in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the smallest country to ever qualify for the quadrennial tournament redeemed themselves through their goalkeeper, Eloy Room. The 37-year-old brickwall as at the heart of Curacao’s inspired second Group E appearance in a goalless draw against Ecuador at the Kansas City Stadium on Saturday night. The Netherlands-born goalkeeper remained unflinching as Ecuador launched an avalanche of attempts at the target and a whopping 27 shots in all, taking away a World Cup record in only his second appearance for the most shots saved in regulation time. Room’s display also marked the second-highest ever saves in a World Cup appearance by a goalkeeper in the record books. FIFA World Cup day 4 recap: Curacao lose history-making game; Dutch drop points | Football News

FIFA World Cup day 4 recap: Curacao lose history-making game; Dutch drop points | Football News

Before the World Cup began, a video of the Curacao team went viral. In it, the players are arriving in an old-fashioned blue school bus with no windows, players sticking their arms out and banging away on the metal exterior from the outside. The video was meant to portray the down-to-earth vibe of the team headed to its first ever World Cup. On Sunday, though, Curacao were dreaming of their campaign taking flight in Houston, the space capital of the USA. For a brief phase, fans and players even dared to day dream of an upset over Germany. Never mind that they were playing their first-ever game in the country’s history at the FIFA World Cup or that their opponents have won the World Cup four times. Never mind that it’s a tiny island in the Caribbean with a population of just over 1,58,000 inhabitants and a land area of 171 square miles. Never mind that their opponents, with a population of 83.6 million, are the most populous country in the European Union and the …

Curacao – blue curacao mixer, FIFA debut and a teetotaler coach in Dick Advocaat

Curacao – blue curacao mixer, FIFA debut and a teetotaler coach in Dick Advocaat

It’s a heady cocktail, goes the cliche. But Curacao, in the former Dutch West Indies Company account books, with fewer than 2 lac people, has made the World Cup the first time. Curacao will now forever be known for its heroic football team. But well before that, Blue curacao liqueur that distinctive blue mixer used to rustle up Blue lagoon or Blue Hawaii, owed its origins to a bitter orange that took a liking only to this unique island. Significantly, the laraha citrus fruit had skin-deep value. The flesh was too bitter and cannot be eaten, but the peel could be dried for an aromatic orangey oil extracted by — Dutch distillery Bols company. This was turned to liqueur, called ‘cream of the sky.’ The blue color was added – solely for effect. It was easily the first time you might’ve heard the name Curacao. The football team had a different Dutch connection. It is coached by Holland”s Dick Advocaat now on his 28th international football team at age 78. He has coached as much …

The tiny Caribbean island completed a fairytale by qualifying for the FIFA World Cup and while their players and fans may not have any experience of how it feels to be at the biggest single-sport extravaganza on the planet, they are likely to have someone in their dugout who has been there before. At 78 years of age, Dutch tactician Dick Advocaat is set to be the oldest coach ever at a World Cup. As of today, German Otto Rehhagel holds that record as he was 71 years and 317 days old when he took charge of Greece in their final group match against Argentina at South Africa 2010. Advocaat is a significant name in the football history of the Netherlands, taking the reins of the national team on three separate occasions, apart from guiding teams like South Korea, Belgium, Russia, Serbia, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq, though taking Curacao to the World Cup – the smallest country ever to qualify – may arguably be his biggest achievement.
