Nani and Ashok, attached to the Krishnalanka police station, who were allegedly involved in the wrongful confinement, custodial torture, and death of Gade Sai Krishna, surrendered to the police on Monday (June 29, 2026). The head constables had been missing since the arrest of Circle Inspector S.S.V.V. Nagaraju. They surrendered to the NTR Commissionerate police, who shifted them to the SIT office, where the team head, IGP M. Ravi Prakash, and SPs Adnan Nayeem Asmi and Amit Bardar questioned them until late in the night. The head constables are accused of resorting to custodial torture of Sai Krishna at the Krishnalanka police station, which led to his death. They reportedly assisted Mr. Nagaraju in disposing of the body. She was given a clean chit in one of those instances. The inspector, Sandhyarani Jena, was recently posted at the Talchua Marine police station in coastal Kendrapada district, and was suspended on Wednesday for “gross misconduct and dereliction of duty” after a 55-year-old woman and her 31-year-old son lodged a custodial torture complaint. The mother and son were summoned to the police station by Jena over a domestic dispute case. A departmental probe has also been ordered against Jena’s conduct based on which further action will be initiated against her, officials said. Jena did not respond to calls and messages seeking a comment. According to the complainants, the officer assaulted the 55-year-old and disrobed her. A two-judge bench of the Bombay High Court on Monday upheld a 2022 special court order directing that eight police personnel stand trial for murder in the 2014 custodial death of 25-year-old Agnelo Valdaris. The High Court observed, “Prima facie it appears that since Agnello was severally beaten up in the illegal police custody, he had sustained various injuries which were opined as more than 12 hours and 24 to 96 hours old.”It further held that the officers were “involved in this episode” and that there was “no reason to treat the impugned order (of the special court) as illegal or erroneous.” Valdaris and three others, including a minor, were detained by the Wadala Government Railway Police on the night of April 15, 2014, in connection with a theft case. Police had claimed that Valdaris died on April 18 after being hit by a train while allegedly escaping custody around 11 30 am. “The case dates back to June 19, 2020, wherein the accused police officials of Santhankulam PS had wrongfully confined P Jeyraj. His son Benniks, who went to police station to enquire as to why his father was detained was also confined after some altercation,” a spokesperson of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which probed the case, said in a statement. Thereafter, the father and the son were mercilessly beaten and brutally tortured by the accused police officials on the intervening night of June 19 and 20, 2020, the spokesperson said. “Benniks succumbed to injuries on 22nd and Jeyraj on 23rd June. Benicks (31) died of custodial torture during COVID-19 lockdown at the Sattankulam Police Station in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, the First Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai on Monday (March 23, 2026) convicted all nine police personnel accused in the case. Judge G. Muthukumaran said he would pronounce the quantum of sentence on March 30 and extended the remand of the convicts till then. Former Director General of Police (DGP) Shabbir Khandwawala, 76, who was Gujarat’s first Muslim police chief, was Tuesday acquitted in a case of custodial torture going back 50 years by the Gujarat High Court on the grounds that the  prosecution had “failed to establish beyond reasonable doubt” the bodily injury to the complainant was inflicted in police custody. In a 164-page judgment delivered Tuesday, Justice Gita Gopi of the Gujarat HC set aside the 2003 judgment that had convicted the 1973-batch IPS officer to five years of rigorous imprisonment handed out by the Additional Sessions Judge of the Fifth Fast Track Court in Junagadh, holding that it was “erroneous and fails in merit”. The State government’s appeal seeking enhancement of the sentence was also dismissed. The trial was carried out on a complaint by one Merag Haja who alleged he was tortured in custody to “extract a confession” that led to him being permanently maimed.
