A man was arrested from Kolkata’s Garden Reach area for allegedly sending an email to the police threatening a suicide bomb attack on West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari “with the help of terror outfit Al Qaeda”, a senior officer said on Saturday. (Samir Jena/HT) The man, identified as 27-year-old Hasnain Iqbal, was arrested on Friday night following a joint probe by the cyber cell and the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police. Additional CP-IV of Kolkata Police, V Solomon Nesakumar, said the threatening email was received by Bhowanipore police station around 10:15 am on May 14. The email sender claimed that a suicide attack would be carried out on the CM with the help of Al Qaeda. “The email was sent using the identity of a woman. After receiving a complaint, an investigation was immediately initiated by the cyber wing and the STF,” Nesakumar told reporters. Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly’s wife and noted Odissi dancer Dona Ganguly has lodged a complaint with Kolkata Police, alleging that she has been subjected to obscene and body-shaming comments on social media. Dona approached the Thakurpukur police station on Wednesday night to file the complaint. The police have registered a formal case against unknown persons. She has alleged that a Facebook account has been repeatedly posting objectionable comments targeting her. According to the complaint, a Facebook page has been continuously uploading obscene remarks about her following her performance at the Kolkata International Film Festival. Dona and her troupe had performed at the KIFF inauguration on a song composed and written by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The Vadodara Cyber Crime unit has detained 17 people part of an interstate cybercrime racket for allegedly siphoning off more than Rs 94 lakh from a city resident by enticing him to download a fake stock market application, officials said on Thursday. The 17 accused were nabbed on Wednesday. They were sent to two days’ police custody Thursday. The racket was unearthed based on Rajiv Ramakrishna’s complaint, according to which he was duped of Rs 94.18 lakh by cyber fraudsters who lured him into clicking on a social media advertisement promising big returns from stock market investments.
