Indian cyclists to look out for

Indian cyclists to look out for

India’s top cyclists are currently competing at the 2026 Asian Track Cycling Championships, which is being held at the Tagaytay City Velodrome in the Philippines from March 25 to 31. The Indian contingent is chasing its first senior medal after three years, after having two consecutive medalless outings at the continental showdown. This year, the competition has much more importance for India, as this is probably the last chance for the cyclists to showcase their potential ahead of Asian Games selections. Leading the Indian contingent in the Philippines is once again the trio of Ronaldo Singh, David Beckham Elkatohchoongo and Celestina from Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Celestina has been on a continuous rise in the women’s sprint category and impressed on the opening day, leading the women’s team sprint to a new national record alongside Triyasha Paul and Keerthi. On the second day, David Beckham also had a good outing, reaching the final of the men’s Keirin ahead of former world medalist Shinji Nakano of Japan. Although he missed out on India’s first-ever Keirin medal, …

Why top cyclists carry women’s stockings, safety pins and kitchen funnels | Sport-others News

“Hahahaha, we are all crossdressers, and like to stay cool,” guffaws a senior support staff of a Spanish cycling team, as he pulls out a wad of women’s stockings. Pre-race team tents at cycling’s Pune Grand Tour, see hectic activity with mechanics fussing over bikes with fancy tool kits. But sport’s typical improvisations and last-minute hacks are unavoidable, and teams travel with paraphernalia which is straight out of a novelty shop: women’s stockings, thin ankle socks and safety pins. There’s also kitchen funnels and zealously guarded tags with riding symbology for maps that crunch race strategy into a 1 inch X 4 inch sticker. But first, the rolls of women’s beige stockings. Massive plastic carry bags deliver ice cubes to each of the 30 team tents. This ice is then chucked into the stockings and fashioned into ice bags that are dunked into the back of the jersey, below the neck, for typically hot racing days. “It keeps the cyclists cool and women’s stockings are best suited for their material because the ice stays intact …

Two unlikely cyclists star in Pune: Manav Sarda from bhujia city of Bikaner and Sainbayar of mountainous Mongolia | Sport-others News

In a sport that consistently logs winners from Europe and the Tasman Antipodes New Zealand and Australia, Asians are fewer in numbers, and find it tough to break through. Even so, pro cycling teams from China, Malaysia, Korea and Thailand, are attempting to find a toehold at cycling’s Pune Grand Tour. The same impediments of genetics, cycling culture and sheer exposure stop Asians from acing the long road race of cycling. But two Asians have smashed conventions – in their own distinct ways – bagging attention. Jambalhamts Sainbayar is a pioneer from Mongolia, who has been finishing with the orange jersey (best Asian finisher) on all three completed days of the UCI 2.2 event at Pune, and racing for 11 years now, currently with one of Spain’s top teams Burgos Burpellet. Mongolia is hardly ever on the pro-sport map of the world, but the 29-year-old started a trend that was astonishing for his compatriots that it led to an explosion of expressive cycling (speeding) in the sport. “Mongolia mostly has just wrestling, judo and pistol …

Why cyclists put on nasal strips, as important a part of cyclist’s gear as the helmet and shades | Sport-others News

Why cyclists put on nasal strips, as important a part of cyclist’s gear as the helmet and shades | Sport-others News

Riders at the Pune Grand Tour have a face-care routine though it’s not powdering of their noses. Right before they step out of their tents, riders get busy with slathering or spraying sunscreen on their arms. And looking into their mobile phone mirrors to locate the exact spot on the nose bridge to tape on a ‘nasal strip’. Nasal strips have leapt on to other sports, but their predominance amongst road cyclists is pretty high. Enzo Fuentes of Pro Cycling Team says getting onto a professional cycling set-up solved two of his issues: breathing correctly when cycling, and disturbed sleep. His teammates from Andorra joke that he sought out the strips because they informed him he snored. But the rider says it’s essentially to clear nasal pathways and regulate breathing. “I started using them two years ago after joining the Pro Cycling team. It’s also to ensure I’m breathing right when I sleep,” he says. A bunch of Spanish, French, Dutch and Belgian teams here travel with a box of nasal strips, which are stuck …

Pune Grand Tour: Cyclists gear up for the unknown — a climb before end of second stage | Sport-others News

Pune Grand Tour: Cyclists gear up for the unknown — a climb before end of second stage | Sport-others News

Professional cyclists notice funny details. Like, afternoon heat spikes of the ostensible January winter and how the “good” grey asphalt feels under the wheels. But what they will most feel in the sinews of every straining muscle at India’s biggest international road cycling event, the Pune Grand Tour, is how a road stretch from Kondhanpur to Khadakwasla lake brutally ascends, testing their lung capacity on an up-climb. As the pro cycling caravan heads into race days in the city, all the buzz among riders is about Day 2 when Pune will exert their gasping breath. “After riding hard through the day, there’s a climb just 15 kms from the end of the second stage, that has a 10 percent steep upward incline which is whoa,” says the Netherlands team director Maint Berkenbosch, with a mock wince and whistle, indicating a wickedly curated gradient challenge for all international riders. In true Marathi style, the winner of that day will unofficially get crowned “Ghaatancha Raja” (King of Climbs). Frenchman Pierre Chartier, on a specialised S18 bike, poetically …
