Moderate rainfall forecast for western ghats due to cyclonic circulations: IMD

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate rainfall in some districts along the western ghats on Monday, due to the influence of multiple low-pressure systems over nearby sea regions. According to the news agency IANS, officials said a low-level cyclonic circulation is currently active over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining areas of the Lakshadweep and Kerala coasts. Another low-level cyclonic circulation has also formed over the Comorin Sea and surrounding regions. These systems are expected to impact weather patterns across parts of southern India, bringing moderate rainfall to the Western Ghats districts. As per IANS, weather experts have advised residents in these regions to remain cautious, particularly in hilly and landslide-prone areas, as intermittent rain could affect daily activities and travel. The IMD has also issued a fog advisory for several interior districts. From Monday until the 5th of this month, moderate fog conditions are expected during the early morning hours in Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Nilgiris, and Dindigul districts. The Meteorological department in Chennai on Friday issued an alert regarding Cyclonic Storm Ditwah, stating that the cyclonic storm, which is centred over coastal Sri Lanka and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, has moved north-northwestwards at a speed of 10 kmph since the past six hours. According to the Chennai Met Department, Cyclonic Storm Ditwah remained centred at 8:30 am (IST) over the same region, near a latitude of 8.3degN and a longitude of 81.0degE. The system is located approximately 40 km southwest of Trincomalee and 100 km northwest of Batticaloa, in Sri Lanka. On the Indian side, the cyclone is located about 320 km south-southeast of Karaikal, 430 km south-southeast of Puducherry, and 530 km south of Chennai. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that an upper air cyclonic circulation is likely to form around May 21 over the east-central Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast. A low-pressure area will likely form over the same region around May 22, under its influence and thereafter, it is likely to move northwards and intensify further, the IMD said. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bengaluru has issued warnings for coastal Karnataka. It predicts extremely heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning with strong surface winds until May 21 and very heavy to heavy rains until May 26. For south interior Karnataka, the IMD forecast extremely heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning until May 21 and heavy to very heavy rains until May 26. It is likely to continue moving west-southwestward and weaken into a deep depression within the next few hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.  As per the IMD, the cyclone crossed the coast near Puducherry between 10:30 pm and 11:30 pm, with the wind gusting at 70-80 kmph up to 90 kmph.  In a post on X, IMD said, “The Cyclonic Storm FENGAL crossed North Tamil Nadu & Puducherry coasts near latitude 12.05°N and longitude 79.9°E, close to Puducherry, between 2230 hrs IST and 2330 hrs IST yesterday, the 30th November as a cyclonic storm with wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph. Cyclone Fengal Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that the deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm ‘Fengal’ on Friday afternoon. The storm is expected to make landfall near Puducherry on Saturday, November 30 with wind speeds gusting up to 90 kmph. Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management KKSSR Ramachandran chaired a meeting with senior officials at the state emergency operations centre to review preparedness and relief measures. The IMD has issued heavy rain warnings for several districts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
