THE HIGH velocity winds that wreaked havoc across several districts of Gujarat on Monday night led to three deaths and left one person injured after a massive signboard put up under the ‘Smart City Mission’ collapsed in Dahod. The deceased persons were aged 50, 70 and 72 years, officials said on Tuesday. On Monday night, following thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, a signboard installed near Garbada Chowkdi fell due to strong winds, injuring at least four passersby. One person died on the spot on Monday and the two others died during treatment on Tuesday. “The high-speed wind injured four people – riding multiple two-wheelers. While one was found dead on the spot, three were taken to the Zydus hospital in Dahod. Among them, two more died on Monday,” Dahod collector Surabhi Gautam told The Indian Express. Among the deceased, who were residents of Dahod and Garbada talukas, the one who died on the spot was identified as 70-year-old Ninama Shakariyabhai, a resident of Dungar Faliya in Usarvan village. Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s visit to Dahod, excitement is building around the inauguration of the newly completed Dahod Locomotive Manufacturing Workshop, a major infrastructure milestone for Indian Railways. Speaking ahead of the Prime Minister`s arrival, Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Western Railway, highlighted the swift progress made at the facility. “You can see right now behind me is the first locomotive that has been manufactured at this workshop. The foundation stone of Dahod locomotive manufacturing workshop was laid just a couple of years back in 2022 to be precise, and within 3 years, as we can see this production centre is completely ready to be inaugurated shortly,” CPRO said. The foundation stone of the unit at Dahod was laid in April 2022 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with an estimated cost of Rs 20,000 crore. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday said the electric locomotive manufacturing unit at Dahod in Gujarat will start producing a sufficient number of high-speed freight train engines in another three years.  India will export engines manufactured at Dahod unit, he added. Vaishnaw went to Dahod to review this yet-to-be fully functional manufacturing unit as well as the production status of the first 9000 horsepower (HP) engine from Dahod.
