Why is the Davos WEF important for Maharashtra CM Fadnavis? | Mumbai News

The week-long (January 17 to 24) trip of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to Davos, Switzerland, to attend the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) meet has resulted in the state getting investment proposals worth Rs 30 lakh crore. With 3.5 years of his tenure remaining, political observers said, Fadnavis will have to quickly implement the MoUs inked in Davos to counter the Opposition’s charge that the BJP was promoting Gujarat’s economic interests at the cost of Maharashtra. Meanwhile, Fadnavis’s announcement of Rs 30 lakh crore investment proposals has led to some discomfort within alliance partners. This is evident as neither the Shiv Sena nor the NCP has hailed the development. A senior NCP minister said on condition of anonymity, “If coalition dharma was strictly adhered to, the CM should have shared the outcome at Davos first with Deputy CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, who is also the finance minister. They should have collectively taken the credit for investments.” However, dismissing these sentiments as part of coalition pinpricks, a BJP strategist said, “CM …

Vaishnaw at Davos| India News

Minister for electronics and information technology (MeitY) Ashwini Vaishnaw pushed back against the suggestion that India belongs to a second tier of AI nations, at the World Economic Forum panel titled ‘AI Power Play, No Referees’. His remarks came after IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva outlined IMF’s newly created Index of Preparedness, which groups countries into those that “make it happen”, those who “watch it happen”. Ashwini Vaishnaw (ANI) Georgieva named the United States, Denmark and Singapore as the top three countries, and said emerging markets such as Saudi Arabia and India ranked relatively high because of their investments in technology, placing India in the higher spectrum due to its long-standing focus on IT. Responding to a question on whether India, seen as part of a second grouping, would need to align more closely with the US or China, Vaishnaw said India clearly belongs in the first group because it is working across all five layers of the AI stack. “Actually, clearly in the first group. And the reason for that is, there are five …

‘It’s all about the land’: Zelenskyy says Ukraine to hold talks with US and Russia | World News

Breathless Growth: Gita Gopinath Says Pollution Hurts India More Than Tariffs; Backed By Shashi Tharoor | Economy News

Last Updated:January 22, 2026, 22:35 IST Echoing Gopinath’s Davos statement, the Congress MP suggested that the Prime Minister’s Office should appoint a dedicated ‘Air Quality Czar’ Tharoor echoed Gopinath’s concerns by highlighting a decade-long struggle to bring air pollution into the mainstream political discourse. Image/X In a sobering assessment of India’s economic trajectory, Gita Gopinath, a professor at Harvard University and former chief economist of the International Monetary Fund, has warned that environmental degradation poses a more significant threat to the nation’s wealth than international trade barriers. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday, Gopinath asserted that the internal costs of pollution—ranging from public health crises to diminished labour productivity—now outweigh the potential risks posed by global protectionism or shifting tariff regimes. Her remarks put the spotlight on a growing consensus among global economists that India’s macroeconomic stability is inextricably linked to its air and water quality. The intervention has drawn immediate support from some domestic political figures who have long advocated for environmental reform. Shashi Tharoor, a Member of Parliament and …

“How Stupid Were We?” Trump Stuns Davos with Greenland Annexation Plan and a Harsh Warning to NATO

Ahead of his much-awaited speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, US President Donald Trump promised an outcome “that’s going to be very good for everybody.” His winding speech at the forum on Wednesday, clocking over an hour and ten minutes, did not disappoint. From Greenland and Venezuela to the war in Russia-Ukraine and the state of the US economy, the president addressed a range of issues, all while emphasising American exceptionalism. The overall message was singular and decisive: That the fate and the successes of economies worldwide rest on the success of the United States. “The United States is the economic engine of the planet. When America booms, the entire world booms… When it goes bad, you all follow us down,” he said. Here are the major takeaways. 1 – Greenland, the “piece of ice” NATO owes the US Since returning to the White House a year ago, Trump has repeatedly threatened to invade Greenland by any means necessary. Over the past year, his administration has engaged in various overtures, ranging from pressuring …

Trump drops blunt verdict on China at Davos, then goes on to blast Europe’s windmill obsession

Published on Jan 21, 2026 11:32 pm IST In a fiery Davos speech, Donald Trump mocked Europe’s “loser” windmills, claiming “stupid people buy them” while “smart” China just makes and sells them, then bragged that US oil output is up 730,000 barrels a day and that Washington just took 50 million barrels from Venezuela to “split” as Caracas “makes more money in six months than in 20 years.” He then hailed what he calls the fastest economic turnaround in US history: stagflation “defeated, borders” impenetrable,” 52 stock market records and up to $20 trillion in new investment.   News / Videos / Trump drops blunt verdict on China at Davos, then goes on to blast Europe’s windmill obsession Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here. Davos 2026: `India set to become third-largest economy in coming years`

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday, in his address at the World Economic Forum, stressed that India is poised to become the world`s third-largest economy in the next few years, driven by a decade of “well thought-through” structural changes and focused execution, news agency ANI reported. Vaishnaw highlighted a trajectory where the nation is expected to maintain a real growth rate of 6 to 8 per cent. He attributed this momentum to four strategic pillars: massive public investment in physical, digital, and social infrastructure; inclusive growth ensuring the “entire society grows along with the growth of the country”; a push for manufacturing and innovation; and a rigorous drive toward simplification, ANI reported.  The Union Railway Minister further highlighted, “All this, combined with the base of technology that we have put in, we can very clearly say that India is going to grow with a 95 per cent confidence interval in the next five years,” while adding that security of the poorest comes as a priority. Supporting Vaishnaw’s view, economist Gita Gopinath pointed out that based …
