Monsoon arrives in Mumbai 12 days late; joint third-most delayed onset since 1950

The annual Southwest Monsoon advanced further into Maharashtra on Tuesday and reached Mumbai 12 days after its normal onset date of June 11, a day after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated a brief revival in the weather activity over the region. IMD data, as per records since 1950, shows that this is the joint third-most delayed monsoon onset over Mumbai. Last year, the monsoon arrived in Mumbai on May 26 — 16 days ahead of schedule and the earliest onset in 75 years. In contrast, the most delayed onset was recorded on June 25 in 1959, 2019 and 2023. After a prolonged dry spell through most of June, Pune received its first widespread rainfall Sunday evening, bringing relief to residents from the warm and humid conditions. However, the showers were triggered by thunderstorm activity and the southwest monsoon is still to officially reach the city. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), NDA recorded the highest rainfall till 5.30 pm at 78.5 mm, while Shivajinagar received 18.3 mm. A bench of president Dr Gudla Tanuja and member Varri Krishna Murthy were hearing the complaint filed by 53-year-old Savara Bhaskar, who sought directions to the insurance company to pay the sum assured of Rs 50 lakh and Rs 1 lakh as compensation for mental agony. “The opposite parties (HDFC Insurance), having issued a policy based on the proposal receiving the premium amount, cannot disown their liability after the risk invoking the exclusionary clauses. Hence, the Commission is constrained to hold that the opposite parties miserably failed in discharging the burden in proving the defence and the acts of the opposite parties in cancelling the policy after risk without any justifiable ground tantamount to deficiency in service,” the May 30 order read. ‘Insurer can’t disown liability’ The commission held that the …
