Talks between the Jharkhand government and student groups protesting alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations failed to break the deadlock on Saturday. A five-member government panel met the faction led by JLKM leader Devendra Nath Mahto, whose hunger strike entered its seventh day, followed by separate meetings with delegations of the Congress-backed NSUI, Adivasi Chhatra Sangh (ACS), and Jharkhand Chhatra Morcha (JCM). “Demands of protesting aspirants are genuine; we will place these before CM Hemant Soren,” state minister Sanjay Prasad Yadav said. Centre reissues notification on Western Ghats eco-sensitive zone amid deadlock with States

The Western Ghats is spread across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. | Photo Credit: H. Vibhu The Union Environment Ministry has reissued, for the seventh time in over a decade, its draft notification proposing an ecologically sensitive area (ESA) across the Western Ghats, after the previous draft lapsed on July 27 without being finalised. The latest draft, issued on July 27, 2026, will remain open for public objections for 60 days before the Centre considers issuing a final notification. The notification reiterates that once finalised, it would prohibit mining, quarrying, sand mining, new thermal power plants, certain industries and large construction projects within the ESA, while regulating activities such as hydel power generation. The fresh notification underscores the Centre’s inability to resolve long-standing differences with the six Western Ghats States — Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu — over the precise villages and regions that should be included within the eco-sensitive zone. The States had raised concerns over the impact of the ESA declaration on agriculture, plantations, infrastructure, and development. …

AAP’s Sanjay Singh moves Rule 267 notice in Rajya Sabha against mandatory E20 fuel Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh on Wednesday (August 5, 2026) submitted a notice under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha, seeking a discussion on the public outrage and consumer rights issues arising from the mandatory implementation of E20 petrol ahead of the Monsoon Session in Parliament. “The government has advanced its ethanol-blending target from 2030 to 2025 and has effectively made E20 petrol the default fuel available at a large number of retail outlets (petrol pumps) nationwide. Consequently, millions of citizens are being compelled to use a fuel for which their vehicles were neither designed nor certified, all without any meaningful alternative or informed consent,” he said. He noted that the Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari admitted in Parliament that E20 petrol results in a 2-6% reduction in fuel efficiency (mileage), depending on the vehicle type and age. “This admission is significant as it establishes that consumers are forced to purchase more fuel to cover the same …

Baghaei, in a statement, said, “The aim is for Iran and Oman, as the two littoral states, to develop mechanisms to ensure safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz while respecting the sovereign rights of both coastal states and safeguarding Iran’s security and national interests,” CNN reported. (Photo: AP) Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned that any attack on its oil tankers or commercial vessels would trigger retaliation against United States military bases and ships in the region, as tensions continue around the Strait of Hormuz. State-run IRIB News quoted IRGC naval commanders as saying: “Any attack on Iranian oil tankers and commercial ships will be met with a wide attack on one of the American bases in the region and enemy ships.” “Any attack… will be met with a wide attack” The warning follows a series of confrontations between Iranian and US forces in and around the Strait, a key route for global oil shipments.
