India joins elite club with successful ballistic missile defence, anti-ship missile trials

India’s defence research establishment achieved a major milestone after successfully conducting three consecutive missile flight tests on June 10 and 11, demonstrating key technologies for ballistic missile defence and anti-ship warfare capabilities. DRDO has successfully demonstrated multiple crucial technologies bolstering nation’s defence capabilities against different types of enemy threats. (DRDO) The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said the trials showcased India’s multi-layered defence architecture against long-range ballistic missile threats as well as its ability to engage hostile naval targets at medium range. According to DRDO, the multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system successfully intercepted its designated targets during the tests. The interceptors engaged and destroyed incoming ballistic missile targets, validating technologies developed to counter emerging and advanced missile threats. Last Updated:December 09, 2025, 23:55 IST This multilayered air defence system is designed to protect the national capital from various enemy aerial threats, including fast-moving aircraft, missiles, and drones The integrated air defence weapon system (IADWS) is being developed with Defence Research and Development Organisation. (Image: PTI/File) In a major decision, an indigenous air defence system will be deployed solely for the security of Delhi-NCR against aerial threats like missiles and drones. Managed by the Indian Air Force, the integrated air defence weapon system (IADWS) is being developed with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) using homegrown components such as the Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) and Very Short Range Air Defence Systems. This plan marks a shift away from an earlier proposal to purchase the US-made National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System-II (NASAMS-II), primarily due to the high cost cited by the Americans. India is also acquiring remaining squadrons of the Russian S-400 system while also considering proposals for additional S-400s and the S-500 air defence system. This multilayered air defence …

Vertical launch short range SAM for Navy test fired

The trial was done from a land-based launcher in Chandipur. | Photo Credit: pib.gov.in The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) announced on Wednesday (March 26, 2025) that the Vertically-Launched Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VLSRSAM) under development for the Navy successfully demonstrated its near-boundary, low-altitude capability during a test fire. The trial, conducted in conjunction with the Indian Navy at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur off the coast of Odisha, took place at about 12 p.m., from a land-based vertical launcher. During the test, the missile engaged a high-speed aerial target at very close range and low altitude. It executed the high turn rate required to engage such targets, completely destroying the target and thereby establishing its agility, reliability and pinpoint accuracy. All weapon system elements were deployed in a combat configuration — including the missile equipped with an indigenous radio frequency seeker, a multi-function radar and a weapon control system — and performed in line with expectations. Flight data captured by various range instruments developed at ITR Chandipur validated the overall performance of …

Sixth-generation aero-engine can be developed by tying up with foreign firm: DRDO chief

The only way India can develop a sixth-generation aero-engine and other technologies required is by co-development with a foreign manufacturer, Samir V. Kamat, Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), said while noting that India currently invests only 5% of its defence budget for research and development, which needs to increased to 15%. To realise that capability, he said the country will have to invest close to $4 billion to $5 billion, that’s ₹40,000 crore to 50,000 crore. His remarks come against the backdrop of huge delays in the development of indigenous fighter jets, while China has made rapid progress in this area. Incidentally, India is in talks with France for the co-development of a 110KN engine for the fifth-generation jet, Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), that is on the drawing board and at least a decade away from the roll-out of a prototype. There are still critical issues that need to be worked out before an agreement can be reached, sources said on the status of discussions between India and France. The …
