Anna Hazare On Arvind Kejriwal’s Poll Defeat

New Delhi: Activist Anna Hazare has said AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal was doing a “good job” as Delhi Chief Minister, but he started opening liquor vends and faced the people’s wrath as a result. A woman, Rekha Gupta, becoming the new chief minister of the national capital was a matter of pride, he told reporters on Friday, adding that the people voted for her because of her “pure thoughts and deeds”. As chief minister, Mr Kejriwal should have set an example before society but went astray, said Mr Hazare whose anti-corruption movement is credited for the birth of the Aam Aadmi Party. “The earlier CM (Kejriwal) was doing a good job and became Delhi chief minister thrice. I did not speak anything (against him) as he was doing a good job. But then, he slowly started opening liquor vends and issuing licences. Then I got upset,” Mr Hazare told reporters, referring to the AAP government’s controversial excise policy. Mr Hazare, notably, is known for a staunch opposition to the consumption or sale of liquor. At 5, Delhi Sees Fewest Women MLAs In A Decade

New Delhi: Nearly 100 women candidates fought the Delhi Assembly polls this year, but only five – four from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and one from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) – could emerge as winners, the lowest in the last 10 years. Outgoing Chief Minister Atishi, the only woman candidate of the AAP who won this time, was among those five newly-elected women MLAs, who now constitute seven per cent of the 70-member assembly. Of the 699 candidates this year, 96 were women, including nine each from the BJP and the AAP, and seven from the Congress. The three key political parties fielded more women candidates this time than in the 2020 Assembly polls. This year, it was also the first time since the Delhi legislative assembly was reconstituted in 1993 that a higher turnout of women voters — 60.9% against 60.2% of men exercising their franchise – was registered. About 44.08 lakh of 72.36 lakh registered women voters got their fingers inked in the single-phase election on February 5. Women Who Won …

Saffron sunrise: A new dawn in New Delhi | Latest News India

More than 27 years after an onion price crisis left a bitter taste in voters’ mouths and led to the ouster of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in 1998, the lotus has bloomed again in the Capital on the back of a strong campaign that focused on honest governance and civic issues rather than ideological polarisation. Bjp supporters celebrate the party’s win in the Delhi Assembly elections at the party office in New Delhi on Saturday. (Sanjeev Verma/HT PHOTO) After the BJP lost six consecutive assembly elections between 1998 and 2020, it finally outsmarted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on the issue of electoral freebies and welfare schemes, made inroads in slum clusters with a sustained seven-month outreach, highlighted the civic morass that had engulfed the Capital, and consolidated the urban middle-class voter base with tax benefits and dreams of world-class infrastructure. It took a multilayered strategy to breach the AAP’s fortress. For one, the BJP successfully kept the spotlight on a barrage of corruption cases and investigations launched against top AAP leaders — …

PM Modi Pauses Speech To Check On Unwell BJP Worker

New Delhi: Addressing members of the BJP after its spectacular victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paused his speech to check on a party worker and asked people around him to ensure that he was given some water.  The Prime Minister was speaking about how the BJP was, for the first time, in power in all states in the Delhi National Capital Region – Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan – when he noticed that a party worker seated in one of the rows close to the stage was feeling unwell.  Pausing his speech, PM Modi pointed to the worker and said in Hindi, “Is he sleepy or unwell? Doctor, please check on him. Please give the BJP worker some water. Voter message to AAP in 2025 elections: Solve our problems or make way

Voter message to AAP in 2025 elections: Solve our problems or make way

As the results for the Delhi Assembly elections poured in, I was reminded of a comment by the late Sushma Swaraj, the last BJP Chief Minister of Delhi. With the votes being counted in November 1998 at the peak of the onion price crisis, it became clear that the BJP was on its way out. Swaraj said, “Ghar ko aag lag gayee ghar ke chirag se (The house was burnt down by a lamp inside the house).” She was referring to the quarrels between various factions of the BJP, primarily with her immediate predecessor, Sahib Singh Verma. Ironically enough, it is the latter’s son who has defeated Arvind Kejriwal today, and the BJP is on its way back to power in Delhi. The BJP has polled a little over 45 per cent of the votes, which is just about 2 percentage points more than the AAP. Congress, with just over 6 per cent of the votes, has emerged as the true spoiler in the election. Story continues below this ad Much like the 4 Ps …
