Just Like That: Why deny Hindu civilization existed to counter political Hindutva?

Just Like That: Why deny Hindu civilization existed to counter political Hindutva?

These days, there is a debate on the word ‘Hindu’. In its place, some people prefer Sanatan Dharma—the eternal faith. Both are valid, but I want to, in particular, respond to those who say that there is no such word as ‘Hindu’, and therefore Hinduism itself, and the civilization that was its consequence, is not an ancient but a relatively modern notion. These days, there is a debate on the word ‘Hindu’. To my mind, such a claim is prima facie facile. If a people, with a verifiable philosophical vision, religious practice, social norms, kinship rules, creative expression, political thought, ethnic overlap and geographical location, have been aware from time immemorial of their unified identity and can differentiate themselves from others on this basis, does a name tag alter the fact of their existence? Most of the ancient religions of the world, which have been identified as such today and given labels to describe them, were not, at the time of their origin, self-consciously aware of—or concerned about—by what name they would be known to …

Supreme Court says RTE admissions must be treated as ‘national mission’, schools cannot deny entry

Supreme Court says RTE admissions must be treated as ‘national mission’, schools cannot deny entry

Observing that admission into pre-primary class must be a “national mission”, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, “neighbourhood schools” are constitutionally and statutorily obligated to admit students allotted by the state government without any delay. Reiterating the obligation of private unaided neighbourhood schools to admit students allotted under the RTE framework without delay, a bench of justices P S Narasimha and Alok Aradhe said that denial of such admissions undermines the fundamental right to education guaranteed under Article 21A of the Constitution. ICC deny bias claims after West Indies, South Africa’s delayed flights from India after T20 WC exit | Cricket News

4 min readUpdated: Mar 10, 2026 12:32 PM IST The International Cricket Council (ICC) denied the claims made against the world cricket body regarding the preferential treatment offered to England after their T20 World Cup exit, leaving India earlier than other teams amid the growing tensions in the Middle East. Following the concerns raised by the West Indies and South Africa over their delayed departures after their T20 World Cup exits from India, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has denied claims of any preferential treatments for certain teams. Questions were raised after England were able to get back to the UK last Saturday using a charter flight from Mumbai even as the West Indies remained stranded in Kolkata for over a week after their Super 8 exit. Losing to New Zealand in the first semi-final in Kolkata five days ago, South Africa too remain in India ahead of a proposed travel plan on Tuesday. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addresses a weekly media briefing in New Delhi on February 12, 2026.. Credit:X/@MEAIndia. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has once again refused to directly deny claims by the United States government on Russian oil imports on Thursday (February 12, 2026). This comes after a senior U.S. official said that India had reduced its purchases of Russian crude, as the U.S. “wanted [India] to.” The government expressed satisfaction at the amendments made by the U.S. administration to its “fact sheet” on the India-U.S. trade deal. The fact sheet, available on the White House website, has now dropped contentious references to pulses and agriculture, saying it reflects the “shared understanding” between India and the U.S. on trade. However, it continues to state that India has committed to stop buying Russian oil. “The Joint Statement is the framework and remains the basis of our mutual understanding in the matter. Both sides will now work towards implementing this framework and finalising the Interim Agreement,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. “The …

Smriti Mandhana, Georgia Voll deny Delhi yet again with masterful chase for RCB’s second title

Smriti Mandhana, Georgia Voll deny Delhi yet again with masterful chase for RCB’s second title

Delhi Capitals posted a sensational 203/4 batting first, and the first WPL trophy seemed within their grasps. But Smriti Mandhana and Royal Challengers Bengaluru had other ideas, scripting a sensational chase to clinch their second title.  Even fourth time is not the charm for Delhi Capitals. Jemimah Rodrigues had incredible luck with the coin toss right through the tournament, but it didn’t go her way on the night of the final. Never mind though, after being asked to bat first, a superb collective effort took DC to 203/4. The highest total in a WPL final, and they’d have thought this was their year after all. But as it turned out, it was ‘Ee Sala Cup Namdu’ once more for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Smriti Mandhana’s sensational 87 and Georgia Voll’s equally important 79 outweighed Rodrigues’ classy 57 as RCB clinched their second WPL title while DC finished runners-up for the fourth time in four wins. Sensational Smriti Till the end of five overs in RCB’s run-chase, Mandhana had faced just 5 deliveries. It didn’t mean her …
