Teams with similar batting philosophies but different depth

Teams with similar batting philosophies but different depth

3 min readMay 30, 2026 11:14 PM IST Even in an IPL season defined by unprecedented scoring rates, stability remains a premium. Consistency that lasts two months can punch a ticket to the final. Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans embody contrasting run-making philosophies, yet arrive at the same endpoint: clarity over chaos. It is the relative calm within their batting units that has driven success, albeit through different personnel structures. While the defending champions utilise their entire top seven, Gujarat’s batting is visibly pinned on Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler. The efficiency of both units through the first two phases, with minimal drop-offs in intent, has allowed them to outpace the more explosive top orders of Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings. Interestingly, RCB are the only side among the top-five teams to increase their scoring rate as the innings progress. Their Powerplay strike rate of 9.75 runs per over (rpo) has transitioned smoothly into 9.9 rpo in the middle overs (7–16). While the average dips from 41 to 31, RCB …

‘You could literally pick three teams’: Gary Kirsten amazed by India’s depth after T20 World Cup triumph | Cricket News

3 min readMar 11, 2026 01:49 PM IST When Gary Kirsten looks at Indian cricket today, he notices not just the quality of the players but also the remarkable depth available to the team. Recently, Kirsten spoke about the growth of Indian cricket and mentioned that the system is now so strong that the country could “literally pick three teams” that could compete at the highest level. For decades, Indian cricket centred around a few iconic names. Their performances often determined the team’s success. The expectation was that a small group of star players would lead the side through critical moments. However, the former South African opener believed the landscape has changed dramatically. “There are just so many good Indian players around now. I mean, you could literally pick three teams,” he told Wisden. He felt this depth has lessened the reliance on a few individuals and created a stronger system where competition for spots is intense. “There’s just so much depth in the system in India now,” Kirsten added. Kirsten, who coached India from …

IND vs NZ | Anatomy of India’s blockbuster win: Depth and flexibility in batting; variegated and guileful bowling attack | Cricket News

No sooner had New Zealand finally found a breather, seeing India’s batsmen slap them all over the ground to put together the imposing 239-run target, than they were in the line of fire once again. Abhishek Sharma (84 runs from 35 balls) and Rinku Singh (44 runs from 20 balls) had flexed their muscles at either end of the first innings and sent the Kiwis on the back foot. By the second ball of the run chase, Arsdheep Singh looped a vicious out-swinger to see Devon Conway caught behind. A few balls later, a sticky length ball from Hardik Pandya caught Rachin Ravindra’s edge and sent him back into the hut. India’s mystery-spinning trump card, Varun Chakravarthy, arrived for his first over after the powerplay and sent Tim Robinson packing, thus beginning New Zealand’s slow march to an inevitable heavy defeat here on Wednesday. Glenn Phillips 40-ball 78 would go in vain as the Kiwis buckled under the pressure of the scoreboard to hand the hosts a comfortable 48-run victory. With the second half of …

Hockey India League returns: From Harmanpreet Singh’s backup to India’s goalkeeper depth, five things to look forward to | Hockey News

After some teething issues in the rebooted Hockey India League, the tournament returns with some improvements and overcoming off-season hurdles. With UP Rudras pulling out of the league hours before the auction, Hockey India had to step in and take ownership of a franchise – a team that has been named HIL Governing Council – to avoid last-minute embarrassment. There were concerns about foreign players’ availability as well, which were largely addressed (top Dutch players will be absent) to ensure the quality of matches remains high. But a lot of attention will be on Indian players trying to leave a good impression on head coach Craig Fulton, who’d be looking to expand the talent pool. 1) India’s depth Fulton is left with a daunting task of managing a core group that has to contend with playing World Cup and Asian Games separated by less than three weeks. While World Cup medal has eluded Indian hockey for decades now, Fulton can’t afford to lose focus on Olympic qualification at stake from Asiad. The head coach will …

Goodbye June review: Kate Winslet’s directorial debut is a warm family drama that lacks depth | Movie-review News

Goodbye June review: It’s a moment worth celebrating that one of the finest contemporary actors–Kate Winslet–makes her directorial debut with Goodbye June, as well as acts in it. The movie, written by her son Joe Anders, is a sappy and poignant movie centered around a much-adored matriarch, who is hospitalised some days ahead of Christmas. The matriarch June, played by Helen Mirren, is the glue who keeps the family together in spite of their differences. Her sudden hospitalisation and deteriorating health due to cancer relapse bring the four siblings and their exasperated father together. This also reveals the messy family dynamics and resentments. As the film is soaked in the pre-Christmas vibes, one gets the feeling that these issues will be sorted out and they eventually do. However, the process of how that happens is not as engaging for the viewers as it should have been. At chess World Cup, P Harikrishna’s defiant run shows Indian chess has depth

November 15, 2025 07:27 AM IST First published on: Nov 15, 2025 at 07:27 AM IST Over the last few years, as chess prodigies got younger and younger, Pentala Harikrishna made a name for himself as a second by powering the women’s world championship-winning campaign of Ju Wenjun, and then helping D Gukesh become the youngest world champion. Now, perhaps fittingly, as Gukesh has crashed out early from the World Cup at Goa, Harikrishna is still in the mix, flying not just India’s flag, but also of the in-between generation that came between the two world champions, Viswanathan Anand and Gukesh. Out of an unprecedented 24 Indians who started the chess World Cup in Goa, only two — Arjun Erigaisi and Harikrishna — remain in contention. It has been refreshing to see the campaign of the 39-year-old from Guntur, who was once touted as India’s best bet to join Anand as part of the chess elite, but didn’t quite get there. The World Cup is the second most prestigious event on the chess calendar, and …
