NEW YORK — In a dispute of operatic proportions, the production team of Bizet’s “Carmen” at the Metropolitan Opera ordered their names stripped from programs over a restaging decision, and the company intends to bring back sets of a retired 2009 version. In operatic dispute, Met Opera director and designers order names stripped from ‘Carmen’ Director Carrie Cracknell’s production opened on Dec. 31, 2023, in her Met debut, moving the action from early 19th century Seville, Spain, to a contemporary American industrial town. The character Escamillo is a rodeo star, not a bullfighter, in this staging. When the production opened, Escamillo entered in a red Jaguar convertible that crossed the stage as he started his famous Toreador’s Song. He was accompanied by his entourage in three pickup trucks, all the vehicles moving on wires guided by a computer. In the restaging decision, the Jaguar and two trucks were eliminated. ZaiD Khatri from Ajrakhpur, a tiny village in the craft-rich Kutch district of Gujarat, didn’t think much about continuing the family tradition of block printing. The 21-year-old loved painting but it was only during the pandemic lockdown that he had fun with it and got so good at it that he subsequently joined Somaiya Kala Vidya, a skilling school for artisans that helps them contemporise design. “I never liked geometry, so I deconstructed, horizontal, vertical ko tod diya, added the fluidity of my paintings and did asymmetrical designs,” says the young designer who has just set a new grammar that scorched the ramp at the recent Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai. This year’s Costume Designers Guild Awards honor some of the biggest movies of 2024. Wicked, Nosferatu, and Conclave earned top prizes for creating exquisite designs that perfectly went with each movie’s contrasting themes.  Nosferatu costume designer Linda Muir won for Excellence in Period Film. Meanwhile, Wicked’s Paul Tazewell bagged the award for styling in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film category. Lastly, Conclave‘s Lisy Christl won the prestigious award for the Contemporary Film category. All three big winners have also been nominated for the Best Costume Design award at this year’s Academy Awards.  A Complete Unknown’s Arianne Phillips and Gladiator II’sJanty Yates and Dave Crossman are other contenders in the Oscars race for costume design this year.
