New Delhi, The Delhi High Court on Monday directed the Delhi Development Authority to start from May 5 the demolition of illegally constructed structures hampering the renovation of Taimoor Nagar drain in southeast Delhi. We don’t know who are the mafias who have taken money and sold the apartments. How the construction was permitted we need to get an investigation to be conducted. How such a big building could come up suddenly without authorities knowing anything,” the bench said. Meyyanathan inaugur ates a desilting project at Sembiyavelankudi village in Sirkazhi taluk on Monday | Photo Credit: Special arrangement A ₹24.80-lakh desilting project at Sembiyavelankudi village in Sirkazhi taluk under the Water Resources Department’s Special Desilting Scheme was inaugurated on Monday by Minister for Welfare of Backward Classes Siva V. Meyyanathan. The project involves clearing 22 km of the Porai canal ahead of the southwest monsoon to improve irrigation and flood management. The event was attended by District Collector H.S. Srikanth, Poompuhar MLA Nivedha M. Murugan, Sirkazhi MLA M. Panneerselvam, and Mayiladuthurai MLA S. Rajakumar. The Porai canal originates from the Puthumanniyar at Kumarakudi and irrigates 4,008 acres across six villages. It serves as a key drainage channel for five others before discharging into the Vellapallam Uppanaru. The canal is choked with silt and dense weed growth, hampering water flow, and posing risks to both irrigation and drainage. ACB lodges case into graft allegations

Following directions from Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, the Anti- Corruption Branch (ACB) of Delhi has registered a case to probe allegations of corruption and misuse of public funds worth around Rs 80 crore involving the public works department (PWD) of South West Division in carrying out desilting work in Palam. ACB chief Madhur Verma said the agency has registered a case under Prevention of Corruption Act. Officials said that PWD officials allegedly inflated bills, sought payments for non-existent work and violated the tender process. Over four years, it is claimed that around Rs 78.40 crore were improperly paid to a single contractor. The desilting work was carried out at Southwest Road-I and Southwest Road-II divisions of the PWD in Palam.
