Akshay Kumar Urges Men to Prioritise PSA Tests for Early Prostate Cancer Detection

Actor Akshay Kumar has urged men to prioritise regular PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) tests to help detect early signs of prostate cancer. Speaking about the issue, the actor shared a personal message highlighting the importance of awareness, early diagnosis and routine health check-ups for men, particularly those above the age of 50. Kumar spoke about the need to break the hesitation many men feel around discussing health concerns. He stressed that regular medical screenings can play a crucial role in identifying potential health issues before they become serious. The actor encouraged men to take proactive steps toward maintaining their health rather than ignoring symptoms or delaying tests. During his message, Kumar also reflected on his personal connection to the issue. The actor revealed that he lost his father to prostate cancer, an experience that deeply affected him and reinforced the importance of regular medical check-ups. He said that at the time, there was limited awareness within the family about PSA testing and the role it can play in detecting the disease early.   A PSA test …

Private car, secret routes: CBI charge-sheet reveals how cops avoided detection during abduction of Chandigarh dentist | Chandigarh News

Alleging a calculated operation to avoid detection, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has stated in its charge-sheet that a team of Chandigarh Police personnel drove dentist Dr Mohit Dhawan around internal roads for nearly three hours after allegedly abducting him, deliberately steering clear of main routes and CCTV-covered stretches. In the 2022 abduction case, Dhawan, a Sector 21 resident, has alleged he was picked up by a Crime Branch team from outside the district courts complex to prevent him from appearing before a judge. The agency, in its charge-sheet, further claim that between 2 pm and 4 pm, the vehicle was parked near a garden in Sector 44-C where he (Dhawan) was confined inside while officers stepped out to eat, and that he overheard one policeman remark that “the work is done at the district court,” suggesting prior planning. The agency has named nine policemen as accused: Inspector Harinder Singh Sekhon, SI Suresh Kumar, ASI Ajmer Singh and Balwant, Head Constables Anil Kumar and Rinku Ram, and Constables Vikas Hooda, Subhash and Pardeep. The …

Allahabad HC flags delayed pregnancy detection in rape cases, says SOPs not applied effectively| India News

Prayagraj , The Allahabad High Court has observed that though standard operating procedures are in place for medical termination of pregnancy up to 24 weeks, the courts are still faced with petitions filed by rape victims who often gain knowledge of their pregnancy at a delayed stage. Allahabad HC flags delayed pregnancy detection in rape cases, says SOPs not applied effectively Dealing with a suo moto PIL wherein a minor rape victim sought termination of her pregnancy, a bench comprising Justice Saumitra Dayal Singh and Justice Indrajeet Shukla on February 6 sought an affidavit by the principal secretary taking care of women and shild health in Uttar Pradesh. “Since law permits termination of such pregnancies up to 20 weeks and not more than 24 weeks, rape victims often get knowledge of pregnancy late and sometimes, perhaps due to lack of understanding and knowledge of the laws and the procedures, precious time is lost to the victims and their families,” the bench said. Noting that law and SOPs exist in the state, showing its willingness to …

Nematode-based cancer detection method deemed non-patentable in India

Nematode-based cancer detection method deemed non-patentable in India

The Delhi High Court has dismissed an appeal filed by Japan-based Hirotsu Bio Science Inc., upholding the rejection of its patent application for a nematode-based cancer detection method on the ground that it constitutes a non-patentable diagnostic process under Section 3(i) of the Patents Act, 1970. In a judgment delivered on January 17, 2026, Justice Tejas Karia affirmed the order passed by the Assistant Controller of Patents and Designs, which had refused the grant of a patent for the invention titled “Cancer Detection Method Using Sense of Smell of Nematode”. The Court examined the complete specification and claims of the application and noted that the invention proposes detecting cancer by analysing the chemotactic response of nematodes to biological samples such as urine, cells, or tissues. The specification claimed exceptionally high accuracy, including detection of early-stage cancers, and described the invention as a “cancer diagnosis system.” Rejecting the appellant`s argument that the invention merely involved in vitro detection rather than diagnosis, the Court held that Section 3(i) does not distinguish between in vivo and in vitro …

Following the detection of over a dozen cases in Manasa town, the authorities have been instructed to establish a control room there, create a special ward for GBS patients at the local government hospital, and make other necessary arrangements to tackle the outbreak. Deputy Chief Minister and Public Health and Medical Education Minister Rajendra Shukla on Saturday (January 17, 2026) visited Manasa, located 30 km from the district headquarters, to review the situation. After a meeting with officials, Mr. Shukla told reporters that the first GBS patients in Manasa were identified on January 12 and admitted to hospitals in Jaipur and Ahmedabad. He said 14 GBS patients have been detected so far in Manasa, which has a population of about 35,000. “Unfortunately, two patients have died. Two other patients …

INSACOG confirms detection of NB 181 and LF 7 Covid-19 variants in India

INSACOG confirms detection of NB 181 and LF 7 Covid-19 variants in India

India has detected one case of the emerging Covid-19 subvariant NB 181 and four cases of the LF 7 variant, according to recent data released by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). The NB 181 case was identified in Tamil Nadu in April, while the LF 7 cases were found in Gujarat in May. As of May 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized both NB 181 and LF 7 as Variants Under Monitoring (VUM), a classification below the more serious labels of Variants of Concern (VOC) or Variants of Interest (VOI). However, both subvariants have been linked to a noticeable surge in Covid-19 infections in China and several other Asian regions, raising concerns among global health experts about their potential to spread further if not monitored closely. In India, the most prevalent variant remains JN 1, which accounts for approximately 53&#37 of all sequenced Covid-19 cases. It is followed by the BA 2 subvariant at 26&#37, with various other Omicron offshoots making up the remaining 20&#37. Although the WHO’s initial risk evaluation classifies …

Meta is ramping up its AI-driven age detection

Meta is ramping up its AI-driven age detection

Meta is expanding how it uses AI to detect teens on Instagram — and, in some cases, will begin overriding account settings. Instagram announced it was using AI for age detection in 2024; the system looked for signals that users were under 18 years old, like if messages from friends say “happy 16th birthday,” for example (Meta also says it uses engagement data — people in the same age group often interact with content they see in similar ways). Teen accounts on Instagram are subject to more restrictive settings: by default, teen accounts are private, strangers aren’t able to send them messages, and Instagram limits what kind of content teens see. Last year, Instagram changed the settings for all teens on the platform so that safety features were automatically enabled. The company now says it will use AI to proactively look for teen accounts that have an adult birthday, and change settings for users it suspects are kids. In a blog post, Instagram says it will begin testing the feature today in the US. If …

Scientists Discover New Sub-Neptune Exoplanet Using Radial Velocity Detection Technique

Scientists Discover New Sub-Neptune Exoplanet Using Radial Velocity Detection Technique

A new exoplanet has been recently discovered which is reportedly orbiting a nearby star, GI 410. The discovery has been made by a team of international astronomers. The discovery was made as a result of the radial velocity (RV) method. The discovery was made on April 4th, and the planet has been classified as a sub-Neptune exoplanet that comprises a mass of approximately 8.4 Earth masses. Notably, a sub-Neptune is a type of exoplanet that is larger than Earth but smaller than Neptune. What is the Radial Velocity Method This technique or method is widely used by astronomers to detect exoplanets. Also known as the RV method, the process here identifies the variations in the velocity of a central star, which has planets orbiting it. The reason behind the variations is caused by a change of direction of the gravitational pull exerted by an exoplanet while orbiting the star. Astronomers have been able to detect over 600 exoplanets”, highlighting the success rate of the novel technique. The details about the discovery were documented in a …

BatEchoMon, India’s first automated bat monitoring, detection system

BatEchoMon, India’s first automated bat monitoring, detection system

For her PhD research, bat biologist Kadambari Deshpande made overnight recordings of bat echolocation calls in the Western Ghats. A “good night” would generate about 30 GB of data from 11 hours of recording with a bat detector. To process the data, Deshpande would go through several one-minute recordings, scanning every millisecond for bat calls, and make notes on the species and other information on their behaviour and ecology. “It took me 11 months to process 20 nights of data,” Deshpande said. “BatEchoMon can probably give me that in a few hours.” BatEchoMon, short for “Bat Echolocation Monitoring”, is an autonomous system capable of detecting and analysing bat calls in real-time. It is India’s first automated bat monitoring system, developed by Deshpande and Vedant Barje under the guidance of Jagdish Krishnaswamy, as part of the Long-Term Urban Ecological Observatory in the School of Environment and Sustainability at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), Bengaluru. Deshpande is a postdoctoral fellow at the Observatory and the School; Barje, who leads the WildTech Project at the Wildlife …
