How sex test using saliva or cheek swab will determine a woman’s eligibility to compete in elite sports | Explained News

5 min readMumbaiMar 28, 2026 06:36 AM IST In a seismic decision on Thursday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned transgender women and DSD (Differences in Sex Development) athletes from competing in the female categories. Further, it added that any woman wanting to compete in international sport must now undergo a mandatory SRY gene screening, or a sex test. Here’s what to know. What is the SRY Gene? SRY stands for ‘sex determining region Y’. The SRY gene is a segment of DNA that is almost always on the Y chromosome, signalling the presence of testes/testicles and “initiating male sex development by the production of testosterone”, the IOC said. Professor Andrew Sinclair, who first discovered the SRY gene in 1990, had said last year that it is not an accurate marker. “If there is a change in the SRY gene so it does not function as usual, then a person can fail to develop testes and be biologically female,” he wrote in The Conversation last year. So why has IOC decided to screen athletes for the SRY gene before …

Disability percentage can’t determine capability for public employment: Supreme Court| India News

The Supreme Court has held that the percentage of disability cannot be treated as determinative of a candidate’s capability or suitability for public employment, underlining that the State carries a positive obligation to ensure equal opportunity and provide reasonable accommodation to persons with disabilities. Disability percentage can’t determine capability for public employment: Supreme Court A bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta made the observation while ordering the Himachal Pradesh government to appoint a lawyer with 90% permanent locomotor disability as an assistant district attorney (ADA), setting aside the state’s decision to deny him the post despite his success in the selection process. The court also imposed costs of ₹5 lakh on the state, noting that the candidate, Prabhu Kumar, had been “unjustly denied appointment” despite being meritorious and was forced to undergo prolonged litigation. “The percentage of disability, by itself, cannot be treated as determinative of a candidate’s capability or suitability for public employment,” held the bench in a judgment released on Tuesday, emphasising that the statutory framework under the Rights of Persons …

Why is Gene Hackman and Wife Betsy Arakawa’s Death Timeline Hard to Determine? Experts Share Gruesome Details of Scene

Trigger Warning: This article contains references to death. Authorities found Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on February 26. Officers discovered Betsy lying on the bathroom floor near a space heater, while Hackman was in the mudroom. Their bodies showed significant decomposition, and their dog was also found dead in the house. Investigators ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning but have not yet determined the exact cause of death. Dr. James Gill, Chief Medical Examiner for Connecticut, stated that once a body reaches the mummification stage, it becomes nearly impossible to determine when a person died. “Once you get to that mummification stage, there’s nothing to be able to distinguish the two deaths timewise,” he told People. Environmental conditions such as dryness and heat can accelerate decomposition, making it more difficult to establish an accurate timeline. Forensic pathologist Dr. Judy Melinek stated that investigators rely on scene findings and circumstantial evidence to estimate the time of death. She said that factors such as the last time the …
